Samsung Dryer Drum Bearing / Rear Drum Roller Replacement — What This Part Does

The rear drum bearing or drum roller assembly supports the back of the dryer drum and allows it to rotate smoothly during the cycle. On most Samsung dryers, this system uses rear drum rollers mounted on shafts with washers and retaining nuts rather than a traditional sealed bearing. Over time, heavy loads and lint accumulation wear the roller surfaces flat or cause the rollers to seize, creating friction against the drum.

When these support components wear out, the drum drags or wobbles instead of turning freely. The result is loud squealing or grinding during operation and sometimes a drum that won’t spin at all. Because the repair requires full drum removal, many techs also replace the belt and idler pulley at the same time since those wear items are fully exposed once the drum is out.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet and pull it away from the wall to access the rear and sides.
  2. Remove the top panel by taking out the rear screws (typically two or three along the back edge), then slide the top back and lift it off.
  3. Disconnect the control panel wiring harness if present, remove the control panel screws, and set the panel aside to expose the front panel fasteners.
  4. Remove the front panel by releasing the spring clips or screws at the top corners and lifting the panel forward and up to clear the drum and lint screen housing.
  5. Reach into the cabinet and lift the belt off the motor pulley and idler pulley, then pull the drum forward and out of the cabinet to expose the rear bulkhead and roller assemblies.
  6. Vacuum all lint and debris from the cabinet, motor, and blower housing before touching any parts.
  7. Inspect the rear drum rollers for flat spots, wobble, or seized rotation, then remove the retaining nuts and washers from the roller shafts and pull off the worn rollers.
  8. Install the new drum roller assemblies (for example, Samsung part DC97-16782A on many models) with fresh washers and shaft hardware, then reinstall the rear bulkhead if your model requires it.
  9. Check the condition of the drive belt and idler pulley, and replace them if cracked or glazed since the drum is already out.
  10. Set the drum back into the cabinet, loop the belt around the drum and over the motor and idler pulleys in the correct routing path, then rotate the drum by hand to verify smooth motion and correct belt tension.
  11. Reinstall the front panel, control panel, and top panel in reverse order, plug in the dryer, and run a short test cycle to confirm quiet operation and smooth drum rotation.

The Part You Need

PartNotes
Samsung rear drum roller assemblyAmazon | Common part number DC97-16782A for many Samsung dryers. Check the model and serial number on the interior door frame or rear panel and cross-reference with an OEM or aftermarket parts supplier to confirm the exact roller kit for your unit.
Dryer drum drive beltAmazon | Optional but recommended since the drum is already removed. Verify the belt length and width against your model number before ordering.
Idler pulley assemblyAmazon | Optional. Inspect the idler for wobble or bearing noise while the drum is out, and replace if the pulley does not spin freely or shows wear.

When to Call a Pro

If you are uncomfortable disassembling the entire dryer cabinet or lifting the heavy drum out by yourself, call a qualified appliance tech. Also bring in a pro if you discover additional problems during the repair, such as a damaged rear bulkhead, cracked drum, or electrical issues with the motor or thermal components. Techs have the tools to safely handle sheet-metal panels and the experience to reassemble the belt routing and panel clips correctly on the first try.
