Samsung Dryer Door Switch Replacement — What This Part Does
The door switch (Samsung calls it a door jamb switch) is a plunger-activated contact switch mounted in the front panel near the door opening. When you close the dryer door, the door strike presses the switch plunger, changing the internal contact state from open to closed. This signals the control board that the door is secure so the machine can start and tumble. If the switch contacts fail or the plunger does not actuate properly, the control board never sees a closed-door condition and will not allow the dryer to run.
The most common failure mode is worn or oxidized internal contacts that no longer change continuity state when the plunger is pressed. Mechanical wear to the plunger or mounting tabs can also prevent reliable actuation. Less often, the wiring harness at the switch can vibrate loose after panel removal or over time. Because the switch is cycled every time you open and close the door, it experiences thousands of mechanical cycles and will eventually wear out.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Dryer will not start when you press the start button The control board inhibits tumble operation when the door-switch circuit does not show a closed-door condition.
- Dryer stops immediately when door is fully closed Intermittent contact inside the switch can cause the control to see the door as open even when latched.
- Drum light stays on with door closed On models with a drum light, the switch also controls the light circuit, so a faulty switch may leave the light illuminated.
- Door latch feels normal but dryer shows door-open error The latch and door strike can work perfectly but a dead switch will still prevent the control from recognizing a closed door.
- You hear the control beep or display lights up but drum does not turn Power reaches the control but the start relay will not energize the motor until the door-switch circuit closes.
- Continuity does not change across switch terminals when you press the plunger manually With the harness disconnected and a multimeter set to continuity, the switch should toggle between open and closed as you actuate the plunger.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet or switch off the dedicated circuit breaker at your electrical panel.
- Remove the screws securing the top panel at the rear edge, then lift the top up and tilt it back or remove it completely to access the front panel fasteners.
- Disconnect the control panel wire harness if necessary, then remove the screws holding the front panel along the top edge and any hidden clips or fasteners at the bottom corners.
- Lift the front panel away from the cabinet and set it face-down on a padded surface so you can access the inside face of the panel.
- Locate the door switch mounted near the door opening, disconnect the two-wire harness, and press the retaining tabs on both sides of the switch body to release it from the panel.
- Test the old switch with a multimeter set to continuity by probing the two metal terminals and pressing the plunger in and out to confirm the contacts do not change state (this verifies the switch is faulty).
- Snap the new door switch into the mounting hole in the front panel until the retaining tabs lock, then reconnect the two-wire harness to the switch terminals.
- Reinstall the front panel by hooking the bottom edge into the cabinet slots and securing the top fasteners, then reconnect any control panel wiring and reinstall the top panel.
- Restore power and close the dryer door fully, then press start to confirm the dryer recognizes the closed door and begins tumbling normally.

When to Call a Pro
If you replace the door switch and the dryer still will not start with the door closed, the problem may be a faulty main control board, a broken wire in the door-switch circuit harness, or a misaligned front panel that prevents the door strike from pressing the plunger far enough. A technician can use a wiring diagram and voltage measurements at the control board to trace the door-switch circuit and identify wiring faults or board-level failures. If you are not comfortable removing and reinstalling the front panel or working around live electrical circuits during testing, call a qualified appliance repair tech.
