Samsung Dryer C90 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

C90 means over 90% of your dryer's exhaust vent is clogged. Clean the lint filter, duct, and outside hood to restore airflow.

Samsung Dryer C90 Error Code — What It Means

The C90 error code (sometimes displayed as C9) indicates that your Samsung dryer has detected severe airflow restriction in the exhaust path. Samsung states that this code means over 90% of the vent system is clogged, preventing the dryer from exhausting hot, moist air properly. This is not automatically a failed internal component. Instead, the dryer is alerting you to a blocked or restricted vent that needs immediate attention to prevent overheating, extended dry times, and potential safety hazards.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Power off the dryer and empty the drum completely before beginning diagnostics, because Samsung’s vent-blockage test requires an empty drum for accurate results.
  2. Run Samsung’s vent-blockage test by powering on the dryer, then within five seconds press and hold Adjust Time Up and Dry Level simultaneously until InS or In appears on the display, then press Start/Pause to begin the two-minute test.
  3. Read the result when the test completes. C90 or C9 confirms that over 90% of the vent is clogged and that you must address the exhaust path before using the dryer again.
  4. Clean the lint filter thoroughly and inspect the filter housing cavity for any lint that has bypassed the screen and lodged in the duct opening.
  5. Disconnect the flexible vent hose from the back of the dryer and from the wall duct stub, then inspect and clean both the hose interior and the dryer’s exhaust outlet for lint accumulation or crushing.
  6. Check the outdoor vent termination hood for blockages such as lint buildup, debris, or a stuck damper flap, and clear any obstructions so air can exit freely.
  7. If the code persists after cleaning, disconnect the house vent and run a short timed cycle with the dryer venting into the room. If the dryer runs hotter with the vent disconnected, the house ductwork is restricted and requires professional cleaning or reconfiguration to meet Samsung’s airflow requirements.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Lint filter / lint screenAmazon | Replace if the mesh is torn, warped, or clogged beyond cleaning. Use the Samsung part number for your dryer model.
Flexible aluminum or rigid metal vent ductAmazon | Replace crushed, kinked, or heavily lint-packed sections. Use short, smooth runs of rigid or semi-rigid metal duct for best airflow.

When to Call a Pro

If you have cleaned the entire vent path from the lint filter to the outdoor hood, confirmed that the vent is straight and unobstructed, and the C90 code still appears after running the vent-blockage test, contact a Samsung-qualified service technician. Persistent codes after proper vent cleaning may indicate a more complex installation issue, ductwork that does not meet manufacturer airflow requirements, or in rare cases an internal dryer fault that requires diagnostic tools and service-level troubleshooting. A professional can also perform a complete vent system inspection and cleaning if you have long or complex ductwork that is difficult to access.
