Samsung Dryer C9 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

C9 means your Samsung dryer's exhaust vent is about 90% clogged. Clean the lint filter and entire vent duct from dryer to outside hood.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)

Tools Multimeter , nut driver, screwdrivers

Samsung Dryer C9 Error Code — What It Means

The C9 error code (also displayed as C90, CL9, CLg, or Cg on some models) tells you the dryer’s venting system is severely restricted. Samsung states that C9 and C90 specifically indicate about 90% clogging of the exhaust vent. When airflow is blocked, the dryer cannot exhaust properly and internal temperatures climb too high. The machine stops the cycle and displays the code to protect itself from overheating damage.

This code is part of Samsung’s vent-blockage family and points to a physical airflow problem, not an electrical fault. The dryer has detected that nearly all exhaust capacity is gone. Until you restore proper airflow through the duct system, the dryer will not complete cycles safely.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. {‘lead’: ‘Power-cycle the dryer first’, ‘text’: ‘Turn off the dryer, wait 60 seconds, then restart to see if the code clears on its own.’}
  2. {‘lead’: ‘Remove and clean the lint filter’, ‘text’: ‘Pull the lint screen from its slot, scrape off all visible lint, and wash it under warm water with a soft brush to remove any waxy residue from dryer sheets, then dry it completely before reinstalling.’}
  3. {‘lead’: “Run Samsung’s Vent Blockage Test”, ‘text’: ‘With the drum empty and cool, power on the dryer and within five seconds press the model-specific key combination until InS or In appears, then press Start and let the two-minute test finish (0 or End means normal, C9 or C90 confirms severe restriction).’}
  4. {‘lead’: ‘Disconnect the exhaust vent from the dryer outlet’, ‘text’: ‘Unplug power, pull the dryer forward, loosen the clamp on the rear vent connector, and remove the duct completely so the dryer exhaust is open to the room.’}
  5. {‘lead’: ‘Run a short Time Dry test with the vent disconnected’, ‘text’: ‘Plug in and start a timed cycle for at least 30 seconds (turn off Eco Dry if your model has it), then feel the air at the dryer outlet (if it is noticeably hotter with the vent off, the installed duct is the problem and needs cleaning or correction).’}
  6. {‘lead’: ‘Inspect and clean the entire vent path’, ‘text’: ‘Trace the duct from the dryer outlet all the way to the outside hood, checking for lint buildup, disconnected joints, sharp kinks, or crushed sections, and use a vent brush or vacuum to remove all lint from every section of pipe.’}
  7. {‘lead’: ‘Check and clear the exterior termination hood’, ‘text’: ‘Go outside, open the vent cap, and remove any lint blockage or debris, making sure the flapper moves freely and is not stuck closed or obstructed by a nest or screen buildup.’}

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Dryer lint filter or lint screenAmazon | Replace if torn, warped, or permanently clogged with residue that will not wash off.
Dryer vent duct kit (flexible or rigid)Amazon | Use rigid metal duct when possible and keep the run short and straight to meet Samsung airflow requirements.
Exterior dryer vent hood or termination capAmazon | Replace if the flapper is broken, stuck, or the hood is too restrictive for the duct length.

When to Call a Pro

If you have cleaned the lint filter, cleared the entire vent path from dryer to outside hood, and verified that the vent system is short and properly installed, but the C9 code still appears after a disconnected-vent test shows normal dryer heating, contact Samsung service support or a qualified appliance technician. Persistent codes after confirmed vent correction may indicate a control-board issue or internal sensor fault that requires diagnostic tools and factory training. Also call a professional if your vent system is built into walls or runs through multiple stories and you cannot safely access the full length for inspection and cleaning.
