Samsung Dishwasher Standing Water in Bottom — What’s Happening

Standing water in the bottom of a Samsung dishwasher is a drainage fault. The machine is not removing water fast enough or at all, and many Samsung models will display a drain-related error code such as 5C, 5E, OC, or OE when this happens. These codes indicate the dishwasher has detected that water is not draining within the expected time or that an overflow condition tied to drainage is present.

The problem is usually mechanical, not electronic. Something is physically blocking the flow of water out of the tub, or a component in the drain path has failed. The dishwasher pumps water out through a filter, into a drain pump, past a check valve, and then through a hose to your household drain. Any restriction in that chain leaves water sitting in the sump at the end of a cycle.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Check the sink drain and garbage disposal first by running water at the sink and confirming it drains quickly, and if an air gap is installed look for water discharging from it during a dishwasher drain cycle.
  2. If a garbage disposal was recently installed, confirm the dishwasher knockout plug inside the disposal inlet was removed.
  3. Pull the lower dish rack, remove the lower spray arm if needed, and take out the filter assembly, then inspect the sump pit for any debris, food, glass, or foreign objects and clean thoroughly.
  4. Disconnect the drain hose at both the dishwasher and the sink or disposal connection, inspect for kinks or pinches along the entire length, and flush the hose with water to clear any internal blockage.
  5. Access the drain pump from the lower front panel or base area, check the impeller by hand for debris or jamming, and confirm it spins with normal magnetic resistance rather than spinning completely free.
  6. Test the drain pump motor electrically with a multimeter across its terminals, looking for a resistance reading in the range of tens to low hundreds of ohms rather than infinite resistance which indicates an open winding.
  7. Inspect the check valve near the pump outlet for debris, sticking, or damage, and verify it opens freely in the drain direction and closes to prevent backflow.
  8. Verify the drain hose has a proper high loop or air gap per Samsung installation guidelines to prevent siphoning or backflow from household plumbing.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Samsung dishwasher drain pump assemblyAmazon | Required if the pump motor is electrically open or the impeller housing is cracked or damaged.
Samsung dishwasher filter assemblyAmazon | Replace if the fine mesh is torn or the plastic housing is cracked and cannot seal properly.
Samsung dishwasher check valveAmazon | Needed if the valve body is cracked, the flapper is stuck, or debris cannot be cleared and the valve does not seal.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

If you have cleared the filter and sump, verified the sink drain is open, inspected the hose for kinks and blockage, and water still will not drain, the problem is likely the drain pump or check valve. Accessing the pump and valve requires removing the lower panel or base and working in a confined space with electrical connections and plumbing. If you are not comfortable testing electrical components with a multimeter, disassembling the base, or handling the pump and valve replacement, call an appliance repair technician. A pro can also diagnose wiring faults, control board issues, or model-specific routing problems that are harder to spot without service documentation.
