Rheem Water Heater Pilot & Burner Assembly Replacement Guide — What This Part Does
The pilot assembly holds the igniter, thermocouple or thermopile, and pilot orifice that maintain the standing flame required to open the gas valve and prove safe ignition. The burner assembly houses the main burner tube, orifice, and gas feed that heats your water once the pilot proves. These assemblies fail when thermocouples drift out of spec, pilot tubes clog with debris, igniters crack or corrode, or gaskets and grommets deteriorate and allow air infiltration or soot buildup. Dirty or damaged components prevent reliable flame signal, cause the pilot to drop out, or block gas flow to the burner.
Rheem burner and pilot hardware are subject to years of heat cycling, dust, and combustion byproducts. A failed thermopile or thermocouple will not generate enough millivolt signal to hold the gas valve open. Clogged pilot orifices or burner tubes starve the flame of gas. Physical damage to the burner gasket or front-plate grommet creates unsafe venting conditions. When inspection shows soot, a popped thermal release device, or a pilot that will not stay lit after cleaning, replacement of the pilot assembly or full burner assembly is the documented Rheem repair.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Pilot lights but will not stay lit after releasing the knob The thermocouple or thermopile is not generating enough millivolt signal to prove flame and hold the gas valve open.
- Pilot flame is weak, yellow, or flickers constantly The pilot orifice or tube is clogged with debris, or the grommet seal is leaking air into the combustion chamber.
- Burner will not ignite even though the pilot is lit The main burner tube or orifice is blocked, the burner gasket is damaged, or gas flow from the valve is restricted.
- Sooting or black residue visible inside the burner chamber Incomplete combustion from a clogged burner, failed gasket, or venting problem is depositing carbon on internal surfaces.
- Igniter does not spark or clicks but pilot does not light The igniter tip is fouled, cracked, or the barrel connector and lead have failed.
- Thermal release device has popped or is visibly damaged An internal overheat or combustion event has triggered the safety and the affected pilot or burner hardware must be replaced.
How to Replace It
- Turn the gas control knob to OFF and shut off the manual gas supply valve upstream of the water heater.
- Disconnect the thermopile or thermocouple lead, temperature sensor lead, and igniter barrel connector from the gas control valve.
- Use a wrench to disconnect the pilot gas line and main gas supply line from the gas valve and burner assembly.
- Remove the burner access door or filter cover and unscrew the burner retaining screws that hold the burner assembly to the front plate.
- Slide the burner assembly forward and out of the combustion chamber, then inspect for soot, debris in tubes, a popped thermal release device, and a damaged burner gasket or grommet.
- If replacing the pilot assembly only, disconnect the pilot tube from the old bracket and install the new pilot assembly through the front plate, routing the igniter and sensing leads through the grommet.
- If replacing the full burner assembly, transfer the new assembly into position, seat the burner gasket and grommet fully in the front plate, and fasten with the retaining screws.
- Reconnect the pilot gas line and main gas supply line to the gas valve and burner fittings, then reconnect all electrical leads to the valve.
- Restore gas supply, relight the pilot per the label instructions, and verify a stable blue pilot flame and proper main burner ignition when the thermostat calls for heat.

When to Call a Pro
Gas burner and pilot work involves shutting off gas supply, disconnecting gas lines, and verifying safe ignition and combustion after reassembly. If you are not comfortable working with gas fittings, do not have the tools to disconnect flare or compression fittings safely, or if you discover a popped thermal release device or heavy sooting that suggests a venting or gas pressure problem, call a licensed plumber or gas technician. Rheem recommends professional service for any condition that involves the gas control valve itself, draft or venting issues, or if the pilot will not stay lit after replacing the pilot assembly and cleaning all passages. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
