Error Code: Ignition Failure — Hayward IF, Pentair ERR IGN, Raypak ERR 01
What it means: Your pool heater attempted to light the burner, held the spark open for the ignition trial period (typically 5 to 10 seconds), and the flame sensor detected no flame. The control board locks out and displays an error. All three major brands use the same underlying detection method, called flame rectification: the flame rod senses a tiny current (microamps) that flows only when a gas flame is present. No current, no confirmed flame, no heat. The heater stops for safety.
The error codes differ by brand but point to the same failure modes:

Purge air from the gas line. On a heater that has been off for weeks or months, air in the line prevents ignition on the first attempt. Technician Tips
Brand architecture affects your diagnosis path. Hayward H-Series heaters use discrete components, so you can test and replace the spark module, flame rod, and gas valve independently. Pentair MasterTemp and UltraTemp use an integrated digital control board that runs the ignition sequence, so a board failure takes out ignition, display, and safety monitoring simultaneously. Raypak relies heavily on the Honeywell gas valve module, which contains both the gas regulation and ignition sequencing logic. When in doubt about Raypak ignition failures that don’t respond to cleaning, suspect the Honeywell valve.
Spider webs cause more ignition failures in the South and Southwest than most technicians expect. Certain spider species are attracted to the odorant in natural gas. A heater idle for two months in a warm climate can have a web blocking the main burner port. Always check before replacing parts.
A flame rod that cleaned up once will foul faster the second time. If you clean the flame rod and get another season out of it, budget for a replacement at the start of next season. Repeated cleaning removes the protective oxide layer and the rod fouls more quickly each time.

When to Call a Professional
Call a licensed pool heater technician when:
- Gas manifold pressure is outside spec. Adjusting a gas valve regulator requires a manometer, knowledge of the specific valve model, and an understanding of combustion safety. Incorrect settings can produce carbon monoxide or cause uncontrolled combustion.
- You complete all cleaning and electrode inspection steps and the heater still fails ignition. At that point the gas valve or control board is the likely culprit. Both require component-level diagnosis with a multimeter and knowledge of the specific board architecture.
