Error Code: IF (Ignition Failure)

What it means: Your Hayward pool heater tried to light the burner but did not detect a flame. The control module opened the gas valve and activated the spark electrode. After a timed trial, the flame sensor sent back no signal. The heater locked out and displayed IF on the control panel. This applies to Hayward H-series, Universal H-series, and most gas pool heaters from the 2010s onward.

  1. Reset the heater. Turn off the breaker for 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Set the thermostat to call for heat. Watch the ignition sequence. A power cycle clears the IF lockout and lets you observe whether the spark comes on and whether gas flows. If the heater fires briefly and then returns to IF, your problem is the flame sensor. If you never see a spark or hear the gas valve click, move to step 2.

  2. Confirm the gas supply. Verify the shutoff valve on the gas line is fully open, not just cracked. Natural gas heaters need a minimum of 4 inches water column of inlet pressure. Propane heaters need 8 inches WC minimum. You need a manometer to measure this. Attach it to the inlet pressure tap on the gas valve. Open a burner compartment door and listen for the gas valve click during the ignition cycle. If no click happens, the valve is not getting power.

  3. Inspect the spark electrode. Remove the burner tray or access panel to reach the electrode. Look for carbon deposits, cracks in the ceramic insulator, or a bent tip. The gap between the electrode tip and the burner ground should be 1/8 inch or 3 mm. Use a feeler gauge to check it. Clean the tip with fine sandpaper if you see carbon. Replace the electrode if ceramic is cracked.

  4. Check the high-voltage lead. Trace the spark wire from the electrode back to the ignition module. Look for melted insulation, rubbed-through spots, or metal contact with the heater chassis. A shorted spark lead produces no spark even if the module fires. If the lead has any damage, replace the complete ignition cable assembly.

  5. Clean the flame sensor. The flame sensor is a metal rod mounted near the burner. Remove it and clean the entire shaft with an emery cloth or fine grit sandpaper. Do not use steel wool. Steel wool leaves particles that cause tracking. The sensor works by conducting a small DC current through the flame to ground. Soot or oxidation blocks that current.

  6. Measure flame sensor micro-amps. With the heater running, connect a DC micro-ammeter in series with the flame sensor wire. A healthy signal is 1.5 to 5 micro-amps DC on most Hayward boards. Below 0.5 micro-amps and the board sees no flame. If cleaning did not restore signal, replace the sensor rod.

  7. Test the gas valve for power. During the ignition trial, you should measure 24 VAC across the valve terminals. If voltage is present but the valve does not click open, the valve solenoid is stuck or burned out. Measure resistance across the valve coil. An open coil reads infinite resistance.

  8. Clear debris from burner tube and gas orifice. Hayward heaters are prone to spider webs and small debris in the burner intake. Pull the burner assembly and inspect the orifice. Blow compressed air through the burner tube. A blocked orifice reduces gas flow below ignition threshold even when pressure at the valve is normal.

  9. Read the control board LED flash pattern. The board has a small red LED that flashes a diagnostic code. Count the flashes. A steady on or off means the board may be dead. A rapid flash during ignition that stops abruptly points to a failed flame sense. A sequence of 1 to 5 flashes maps to specific failures. Cross-reference with your model’s manual. If the board does not send 24 VAC to the gas valve and does not fire the spark module, replace the control board.
