Noritz Error Code 16 — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Noritz error code 16 means, why over-temperature shutdown occurs, and how to fix it.

Noritz Error Code 16 — What It Means

Error code 16 on a Noritz tankless water heater indicates an over-temperature shutdown — the outgoing water temperature exceeded the unit’s maximum safe limit. The control board detected that the heat exchanger outlet temperature reached an unsafe level (typically above 85°C / 185°F for most residential models) and cut the burner to protect the heat exchanger, plumbing, and users from scalding.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Check and clean the inlet filter screen — A partially clogged cold water inlet filter reduces flow and can cause temperature spikes. Remove, rinse, and reinstall.
  2. Flush the heat exchanger — For units 2+ years old in hard water areas, perform a vinegar descale: connect a small pump to the service isolation valves, circulate white vinegar (1 gallon) through the unit for 45–60 minutes.
  3. Test the outlet thermistor — Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. Compare to the Noritz NRC/NRCR temperature-resistance table. A reading more than 15% off at room temperature indicates a drifting sensor — replace it.
  4. Lower the thermostat set point temporarily — If the unit is set to the maximum output temperature, reduce the set point and see if code 16 clears. This is not a fix, but it confirms temperature-setting vs. sensor issues.
  5. Reset and test — Power cycle the unit (hold ON/OFF for 3 seconds or switch breaker). Run a full demand cycle at normal flow and confirm code 16 does not return.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Outlet thermistorAmazon | Noritz OEM NTC sensor; match model series
Inlet filter screenAmazon | Clean or replace; inexpensive maintenance item
Descaling solutionAmazon | White vinegar or commercial tankless descaler

When to Call a Pro

Gas pressure measurement and adjustment require a licensed gas technician. Persistent code 16 after descaling and thermistor replacement may indicate a heat exchanger that has been damaged by scale and needs replacement — a licensed plumber should assess.
