Navien Flame Rod Replacement — What This Part Does
The flame rod (also called the flame sensor) proves to the control board that the burner has successfully lit. During ignition, the rod sits in the flame path and sends a tiny current back to the board. If the board doesn’t see that signal, it shuts off gas flow and locks out with a Code 003 fault. Most flame rod failures come from contamination, poor electrical contact at the wire boots, or physical damage to the rod or ignitor assembly. Over time, carbon buildup or corrosion on the rod surface blocks the flame-sensing circuit, even if the burner is lighting properly.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Code 003 or ignition failure error on the display The unit shows Code 003, which means the control board did not detect a valid flame during startup.
- Unit clicks or sparks but won’t light You hear the ignitor clicking and see sparks, but the burner never catches or stays lit.
- Burner lights briefly then shuts off immediately The flame starts but the unit locks out within a few seconds because the flame rod didn’t confirm stable ignition.
- Repeated lockout cycles with no hot water The heater tries to light multiple times, fails, and goes into lockout mode requiring a manual reset.
- Visible carbon buildup or corrosion on the flame rod tip When you inspect the assembly, the rod or ignitor surface shows heavy contamination or discoloration.
- Cracked, chipped, or broken flame rod or ignitor ceramic Physical damage to the rod or ignitor insulator means the assembly must be replaced.
How to Replace It
- Disconnect all power to the unit by unplugging it or turning off the dedicated circuit breaker, then verify power is off.
- Shut off the gas supply valve to the water heater and turn off the incoming cold water supply.
- Remove the front cover panel to access the burner chamber and flame rod assembly.
- Pull the rubber boots off the flame rod and ignitor wire connections and carefully disconnect the wires from the assembly.
- Unbolt or unclip the flame rod and ignitor assembly from the burner chamber mounting bracket.
- Inspect the old flame rod and ignitor for contamination, carbon buildup, or physical damage such as cracks or chips.
- Install the new flame rod and ignitor assembly in the same position as the old one, securing all mounting hardware.
- Reconnect the wires to the flame rod and ignitor, making sure the rubber boots are fully seated and pushed on tight.
- Restore gas and water supply, restore electrical power, and test the unit by calling for hot water and confirming stable ignition with no error codes.
The Part You Need

| Navien flame rod and ignitor assembly | Amazon | Check the model and serial plate on the right side of the unit to identify your series (NPE, NPN, NCB). Common OEM part numbers include 30026265A for NPE/NCB models, 30022787A for NPN series, and 3002665A for some NPE units. Match the part number to your exact model. |
When to Call a Pro
If you’re not comfortable working around gas appliances or if the unit still shows Code 003 after cleaning or replacing the flame rod assembly, call a licensed technician. Flame-proving circuits involve both gas ignition and electrical diagnostics, and improper handling can create safety hazards or damage the control board. A pro can also test gas pressure, verify proper combustion, and rule out other causes like a bad gas valve or blocked venting. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
