Navien NPE-180S2 Problems & Error Codes

2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Ignition failure (E003) is the most common problem, usually caused by gas supply issues, dirty flame rod, or blocked venting.

The Navien NPE-180S2 is a condensing tankless water heater in the NPE series. The most commonly reported problems are ignition and flame faults, venting and airflow faults, thermistor sensor failures, and flow or scale-related faults that trigger error codes on the display. Gas supply issues, blocked intake or exhaust piping, dirty filters, scale buildup restricting flow or heat transfer, and failed sensors or corroded connectors are the real-world triggers technicians see most often in the field.

Parts That Commonly Fail

PartNotes
Flame rodAmazon | Fails or gets dirty, causing ignition or flame-loss faults
Thermistor (inlet or outlet)Amazon | Temperature sensor fails open or short, triggering E005/E006/E007/E008 codes
IgniterAmazon | Stops sparking or cracks, preventing ignition
Inlet water filter/strainerAmazon | Clogs with sediment and restricts flow, causing E002 or E001 faults

When to Call a Pro

Call a licensed technician for any gas supply, gas pressure, or gas valve work on this unit. Thermistor replacement, igniter or flame rod service, venting inspection, and heat exchanger descaling or flushing should also be handled by a trained pro familiar with Navien NPE-series diagnostics and fault-code workflows. If you see repeating ignition or flame codes after clearing the fault, or if the unit locks out, a tech with a manometer and combustion analyzer is needed to verify gas pressure, airflow, and burner operation safely. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
