Navien NFC Combi Boiler Error Codes: Complete Guide

⚡ Quick Answer

Navien NFC combi boiler error codes and fault diagnostics. E-series error codes, causes, and technician-level troubleshooting procedures.

Navien NFC Combi Boiler Error Codes

Navien NFC series combination boilers provide both space heating and domestic hot water. Error codes display on the front panel LCD. The NFC shares error code structure with other Navien products, but some codes are unique to the combi configuration.

Most Common NFC Combi Faults

E001/E003 ΓÇö Ignition Failure

Check gas supply pressure (3.5–10.5 in. w.c. natural gas). Verify gas valve opens (listen for click). Check igniter spark — measure resistance (should be < 100 Ω). Clean flame sensor rod with fine emery cloth.

E006 ΓÇö High Temperature Limit

The NFC monitors outlet temperature continuously. If flow rate is insufficient, the heat exchanger overheats. Check system pump operation, expansion tank pre-charge, and all valves are fully open. Scale buildup in the HX is common in hard water areas.

E016 ΓÇö DHW Flow Sensor

The flow sensor activates the burner when hot water demand is detected. A stuck or dirty flow sensor prevents the burner from firing. Remove, clean, and inspect the paddle. Check for debris in the cold water inlet filter screen.

E109 ΓÇö Heat Exchanger Overheat

Common in hard water areas. The stainless HX accumulates scale, reducing heat transfer and flow. Flush with commercial descaler (citric acid solution). Navien recommends annual maintenance in hard water areas.

Parts Commonly Needed

PartNotes
Flame sensorAmazon | Clean first, replace if signal persists
Flow sensorAmazon | DHW and heating flow sensors differ
Heat exchangerAmazon | Expensive ΓÇö descale first
IgniterAmazon | Check resistance before replacing
Fan assemblyAmazon | Match NFC model voltage
Outlet temp sensorAmazon | Match sensor resistance specification

Pro tip: Navien NFC error codes E001ΓÇôE003 almost always have gas pressure as the root cause. Verify gas pressure at the unit with a manometer before checking ignition components ΓÇö it saves significant diagnostic time.
