What Navien error code E009 means, why the heat exchanger overheats, and how to fix it.

E009 on a Navien tankless water heater or combi-boiler indicates a heat exchanger overtemperature fault. The heat exchanger outlet temperature sensor detected water temperature exceeding the safe upper limit. This is a thermal protection lockout — the unit shuts down to prevent damage to the copper heat exchanger, connecting hoses, and surrounding components.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Check for minimum flow — Confirm the fixture demand is above the unit’s minimum flow rate. Clean or replace aerators and showerheads that may be restricting flow below the activation threshold.
  2. Inspect the cold water inlet filter — Navien units have a small in-line filter screen at the cold water inlet. A clogged filter screen reduces flow significantly — remove and clean it.
  3. Flush the heat exchanger — If the unit is more than 2 years old in a hard water area (>7 grains/gallon), perform a vinegar descale flush through the service port valves. Use a circulation pump and at least 1 gallon of white vinegar for 30–60 minutes.
  4. Test the outlet thermistor — With power off, disconnect the heat exchanger outlet thermistor and measure resistance. At 25°C, expect approximately 10 kΩ (NTC thermistor). A reading significantly different from the temperature-resistance curve in the service manual indicates a failed thermistor.
  5. Reset and test — After repairs, press Power off/on or hold the Reset button. Run the unit at full demand and monitor for E009 recurrence.

Parts Often Needed

Need Replacement Parts?

Finding the right replacement parts for your equipment is critical to getting it running again. Check current prices on Amazon — prices and availability change frequently.

When to Call a Pro

If descaling and flow restoration do not resolve E009, the heat exchanger may have suffered damage from prolonged scale buildup. A licensed plumber should assess whether the heat exchanger needs replacement and whether a water softener or scale inhibitor should be added upstream of the unit.
