MrCool Universal Series Error Codes
The MrCool Universal Series (12K, 18K, 24K, and 36K BTU models) is a ductless mini split designed for both DIY installation and professional use. Like most inverter mini splits, it displays error codes on the indoor unit LED panel when the system detects a fault. The codes break down into three categories: sensor faults (E1-E4), communication faults (E5), and protection faults (E6, P0).

E1: Indoor Room Temperature Sensor Fault
The E1 code means the indoor air temperature thermistor has failed or disconnected. This is the sensor behind the front grille that reads return air temperature. Without it, the unit cannot maintain the setpoint.
To diagnose: remove the front cover of the indoor unit. Find the small thermistor mounted in the air intake area. It has two wires leading to a connector on the indoor PCB. Unplug the connector and measure resistance across the two pins with a multimeter set to ohms.
A good MrCool room sensor at 77F (25C) reads 10 kOhm, plus or minus 5%. At 50F (10C) it reads roughly 19.9 kOhm. At 95F (35C) it reads roughly 6.5 kOhm. If the reading is open (infinite resistance), shorted (near zero), or more than 15% off from the expected value at a known temperature, replace the sensor.
The sensor replacement part is inexpensive (usually under $15) and plugs directly into the PCB. No soldering is required.
E2: Indoor Coil Temperature Sensor Fault
E2 indicates the evaporator coil thermistor has failed. This sensor is clipped into a well on the copper tubing of the indoor coil. It tells the PCB the coil temperature, which the unit uses for freeze protection (cooling mode) and defrost control (heating mode).
A failed indoor coil sensor causes erratic operation. In cooling mode, the indoor coil may freeze solid because the PCB never sees the temperature drop. In heating mode, the unit may short-cycle on high pressure or fail to defrost properly.
Testing is the same as E1: disconnect, measure resistance, compare to the 10K NTC table. The coil sensor is often harder to reach because it clips around the copper pipe. Remove the drain pan if needed to access the sensor clip. Slide the old sensor out of the clip, insert the new one, and route the wire to the PCB connector.
E3: Outdoor Coil Temperature Sensor Fault
E3 points to the outdoor coil thermistor. This sensor mounts on the condenser coil piping inside the outdoor unit. It monitors the outdoor coil temperature for defrost logic and high-pressure protection.
Diagnose E3 with the outdoor unit access panel removed. Locate the sensor where the refrigerant line enters the outdoor coil. Disconnect the sensor from the outdoor PCB and measure resistance. The same 10K NTC curve applies.
On the MrCool Universal Series, the outdoor sensor wiring runs through a bundle that can chafe against sheet metal edges. Inspect the wiring for exposed copper at any point along its path. A chafed wire that grounds out against the chassis reads as a shorted sensor and triggers E3.
E4: Outdoor Ambient Temperature Sensor Fault
E4 is the outdoor ambient air temperature sensor. This sensor senses the outside air temperature. It hangs in the outdoor unit’s intake airstream, separate from the coil piping.
The ambient sensor controls the system operating range. When the outdoor temperature drops below the unit’s rated minimum (typically -13F to 5F depending on the model), the unit refuses to run in heating mode. A failed ambient sensor can cause the unit to lock out at normal temperatures.
Test resistance: same 10K NTC spec. The sensor is usually zip-tied to a louver or bracket in the outdoor unit’s air-intake area. If the sensor tests fine but the wiring harness has corrosion or a broken pin at the connector, replace the harness instead of the sensor.
E5: Communication Error
E5 means the indoor and outdoor PCBs have lost communication with each other. On the MrCool Universal Series, a 3-wire cable (L, N, and signal) connects both units. The signal wire carries serial data between the two boards.
Check the signal wiring at both terminal blocks. Verify the wires land on the correct numbered terminals. Loose connections at the outdoor terminal block are common because the wire can pull slightly during the line set installation.
The MrCool Universal Series uses pre-charged line sets that include the communication wire inside the insulation jacket. Inspect the line set for any cuts, kinks, or pinch points where the communication wire could be damaged. A nicked signal wire causes intermittent E5 faults that come and go with humidity or vibration.
If the wiring checks out, power cycle both units. Turn off the indoor unit from the remote, then switch off the breaker serving both units for 30 seconds. Restore power. On some systems, the communication circuit resynchronizes on restart.
If E5 returns immediately, one of the PCBs has failed. The outdoor PCB is the more common failure point. Replace it with the MrCool OEM board for your model.
E6: Water Level Alarm
E6 indicates the drain pan float switch detected high water. The condensate drain line is clogged, the drain pump has failed, or the float switch itself is stuck.
Check the drain line first. Remove the drain hose from the indoor unit and blow through it. If air does not pass freely, the line is clogged. Clear the block with a wet-dry vacuum from the exterior end. For MrCool Universal Series installations running the drain line through walls, use compressed air (below 60 PSI) to blow the line clear.
If the line is clear but E6 persists, locate the float switch in the drain pan. Lift the float manually. It should move freely and click. If the float is stuck in the raised position, clean the switch area with water and mild detergent. Do not use solvent-based cleaners on the float mechanism.
P0: IPM Module Protection
P0 is the most serious code on the MrCool Universal Series. The Intelligent Power Module on the outdoor inverter board detected overcurrent, overvoltage, or overheating. The system immediately shuts down the compressor.
Do not attempt multiple restarts. Each restart stresses the IPM further and can damage the compressor windings.
Start by checking the power supply. Measure voltage at the outdoor disconnect. It should be between 208V and 253V. Loose connections at the breaker or disconnect cause voltage drop that the IPM interprets as a fault. Tighten all power connections.
Next, check the compressor windings. With the unit powered off and the DC bus capacitors fully discharged (wait at least 10 minutes after power removal), disconnect the compressor leads at the outdoor PCB. Measure resistance between each pair of terminals (U-V, V-W, W-U). All three readings should be nearly identical. A large difference between any two readings indicates a damaged compressor winding.
If the power supply and compressor windings check out, the IPM module on the outdoor PCB has failed. Replace the outdoor PCB assembly. On MrCool Universal Series units, the PCB is a single assembly that includes the IPM. Do not attempt to replace the IPM as a separate component.
Resetting Error Codes
To reset error codes on the MrCool Universal Series: turn the unit off using the remote control. Switch off the circuit breaker that serves both the indoor and outdoor units. Wait 30 seconds. Restore power. The error code clears from memory.
If the code returns after reset, the underlying fault is still present. Do not keep clearing the code without diagnosing the cause.

The MrCool Universal Series uses pre-charged quick-connect line sets. Each line set comes factory-charged with the correct refrigerant charge. The connections at both ends use hand-tightened couplers, so you do not need a vacuum pump or manifold gauges for installation.
