Mitsubishi E4 Error Code — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Mitsubishi E4 means, why it happens, and how to fix it step by step.

Mitsubishi E4 Error Code — What It Means

Mitsubishi error code E4 indicates the condensate drain is full or blocked — the float switch inside the indoor unit has detected that the drain pan has reached its maximum level. On Mitsubishi MSZ and MFZ series units, a float switch cuts compressor operation when drain water reaches a critical level to prevent overflow and water damage. The system will not cool or heat while E4 is active. This is one of the most straightforward faults to resolve: clear the drain and the unit resets automatically.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Power off the unit — Turn off at the thermostat and cut the circuit breaker before opening the panel.
  2. Access the drain pan — Remove the front panel and filter. Locate the drain pan at the bottom of the indoor unit. If it’s full of water, use a wet-dry vac to remove standing water.
  3. Clear the drain line — Use a wet-dry vac at the end of the drain hose to suck out any clog. Alternatively, blow compressed air gently into the line from the indoor unit end. Flush with a cup of water mixed with a small amount of diluted bleach to kill algae.
  4. Check drain slope — Follow the drain hose from the unit to the outlet. It should slope downward continuously. Add hose clamps and adjust if any section sags or runs uphill.
  5. Reset the system — Restore power. The float switch resets automatically when the pan drains. Run a cooling cycle and confirm condensate drains freely from the hose outlet.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Condensate drain pan tabletsAmazon | Algaecide tablets prevent buildup; replace every 6 months
Condensate drain hose (1/2” or 3/4” ID)Amazon | Replace if old hose is brittle or permanently kinked
Float switchAmazon | Replace if drain is clear but E4 still triggers; confirm float moves freely

When to Call a Pro

If the drain line is clear and the float switch moves freely but E4 persists, the PCB float switch input circuit may be faulty. That’s a board-level diagnosis.
