Maytag Washer Won’t Drain — What’s Happening
When your Maytag washer won’t drain, the tub stays full of water at the end of the cycle and clothes come out soaking wet. The display often shows F9 E1 or DRN, which means the washer is taking too long to drain water. On front-load models Maytag defines this as drain time longer than expected, usually over 8 minutes.
The washer may pause mid-cycle or refuse to spin because it cannot empty the tub. This is not always a failed part. Most often the problem is something blocking the drain path or an installation issue with the drain hose or standpipe.
Most Likely Causes
- Kinked or clogged drain hose The drain hose is crushed, twisted, or blocked by lint and debris, preventing water from leaving the tub.
- Drain hose installed incorrectly The hose is inserted more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe, causing siphoning or poor drainage.
- Standpipe height out of specification The standpipe is taller than 96 inches or shorter than the minimum height for your model, disrupting proper drainage.
- Excessive suds Using non-HE detergent or too much detergent creates foam that slows or blocks drainage.
- Drain pump obstruction Socks, coins, or small items are lodged in the pump impeller or inlet, stopping the pump from moving water.
- Failed drain pump The pump motor has burned out or the impeller is broken and cannot push water out even with power applied.
- Wiring or connector problem Loose, corroded, or broken wires at the pump connector prevent the pump from receiving power from the control board.
How to Diagnose and Fix
- Verify the symptom by running a drain or spin cycle and note any fault code displayed, typically F9 E1 or DRN.
- Inspect the drain hose from the washer to the standpipe for kinks, crushing, clogs, or objects stuck inside.
- Check that the drain hose is inserted no more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe and confirm the standpipe height is within 96 inches maximum and the minimum specified for your model.
- Look for excessive suds in the tub and verify you are using HE detergent in the correct amount.
- Access the drain pump (usually behind a front access panel or under the washer) and remove any hoses to inspect for foreign objects in the pump inlet, outlet, and impeller.
- Run the service drain-pump test from the diagnostic mode and listen for the pump to activate.
- Measure voltage at the pump connector while commanding the pump on in test mode (if voltage is present but the pump does not run, the pump is failed; if voltage is absent, trace wiring back to the control board).
- Check all wiring harness connections to the pump for loose terminals, corrosion, or damaged wires and repair or replace the harness if needed.

When to Call a Pro
Call a tech if you’ve checked the drain hose and standpipe installation and the washer still won’t drain, or if you’re not comfortable accessing the pump and testing electrical components. A qualified appliance technician has the tools to run diagnostic tests, measure pump voltage, and safely replace the pump, wiring, or control board if needed. If the machine is under warranty, contact Maytag service before opening any panels.
