Maytag Washer Water-Level Pressure Switch Replacement — What This Part Does
The water-level pressure switch or sensor monitors how much water is in the tub by reading air pressure changes through a small hose connected to the tub. As water rises, it compresses air in the hose and the switch signals the control board to stop filling at the correct level. The part fails when internal contacts wear out, the diaphragm cracks, or corrosion damages the sensor circuit. Soap residue and mineral buildup in the pressure hose or tub port can also block the air signal, making the switch appear defective even when it is still good.
Most pressure switch problems show up as erratic fill behavior or error codes like E1 or F7 on some Maytag models. The control board cannot advance the cycle if it does not get a valid water-level signal, so the washer may keep filling until you manually stop it or refuse to start at all. Technicians usually inspect and clean the pressure hose first before condemning the switch itself.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Washer overfills and water spills into the drum or onto the floor The switch never tells the control board to stop the fill valve, so water keeps running past the correct level.
- Washer underfills or barely covers the load The switch sends a false full signal too early and the valve shuts off before enough water enters the tub.
- Cycle stops partway through or won’t advance past fill The control cannot verify water level, so it halts the cycle and may display an error code.
- Error code E1, F7, or similar fill/sensor fault appears on the display The control board detects a missing or out-of-range signal from the pressure switch circuit.
- Washer drains immediately after filling The control interprets a faulty pressure signal as overfill and triggers a safety drain before the cycle can start.
- Fill valve runs continuously even when the tub is full The switch does not close its contacts or change its voltage output, so the board never receives the stop command.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the washer from the wall outlet and turn off both hot and cold water supply valves at the hoses.
- Remove the screws along the top rear edge of the cabinet or console and lift or tilt the top panel forward to access the pressure switch mounted near the control area.
- Locate the pressure switch on the side of the cabinet or inside the console and follow the small clear or rubber air hose from the switch down to the tub connection.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from the switch by pressing the release tab and pulling the connector straight off.
- Pull the pressure hose off the barb on the switch and inspect the entire hose for cracks, kinks, soap buildup, or blockage.
- If the hose is clogged or damaged, replace it or flush it with warm water and blow through it to confirm it is clear before installing the new switch.
- Twist or unlock the old pressure switch from its mounting bracket and remove it from the cabinet.
- Install the new pressure switch by snapping or twisting it into the same bracket, then push the pressure hose firmly onto the barb until it seats completely.
- Reconnect the wiring harness to the new switch, lower the top panel back into place, and secure all screws.
- Turn on the water valves, plug in the washer, and run a short fill cycle or diagnostic mode to verify the machine stops filling at the correct level and advances through the cycle.
The Part You Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Water-level pressure switch or sensor | Amazon | OEM part numbers include WPW10448876 (also W10448876) and 2312075 depending on model. Check the model and serial number plate inside the door or on the rear panel and cross-reference on the Maytag parts site to confirm the exact switch for your washer. |
| Pressure hose or air tube | Amazon | Replace if cracked, kinked, or heavily clogged with soap residue. The hose runs from the tub air dome to the pressure switch and is often sold separately or included with some switch kits. |

When to Call a Pro
If you are uncomfortable working with live voltage to verify the reference signal (around 5 VDC at the sensor connector when powered), call a technician to diagnose the circuit before buying parts. Also call a pro if you replace the switch and hose but the washer still shows fill errors or erratic behavior, since the control board or tub air-dome port may need cleaning or replacement. Some top-load models require removing the entire console or cabinet shell to reach the switch, and a service call can save time if you are not familiar with that disassembly.
