Maytag F21 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F21 means your Maytag washer detected a long drain or no-drain condition. The most common fix is cleaning the drain pump filter/coin trap.

Maytag F21 Error Code — What It Means

The Maytag F21 code on front-load washers means the machine has detected a long drain or no-drain condition. Water is not leaving the tub within the expected drain window, so the control flags a drainage fault. This is a drain performance issue, not a problem with washing or filling.

The washer is taking too long to empty the tub, or it cannot drain at all. The code appears when the drain cycle times out, typically accompanied by water still visible in the drum or a failure to advance to the final spin.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the washer and turn off the water supply valves to isolate power and prevent accidental starts during the repair.
  2. Check for excessive suds by opening the door and inspecting the tub. If foam is present, let it dissipate naturally or run a rinse and spin cycle with no detergent after you clear the fault.
  3. Remove the lower front access panel (typically held by spring clips or screws) and locate the drain pump filter or coin trap door on the lower right of the machine.
  4. Open the filter housing by turning the cover counterclockwise and slowly pulling the filter out. Have towels and a shallow pan ready, as water will spill. Clean all debris from the filter, the filter cavity, and the pump impeller visible behind it.
  5. Inspect the drain hose at the back of the washer for kinks, clamps that have slipped shut, or blockages. Disconnect the hose from the standpipe or laundry sink and flush it with water to confirm it is clear.
  6. Check the sump hose and pump by removing the pump assembly if needed. Look for debris in the short rubber hose between the tub sump and the pump inlet, and verify the pump impeller spins freely by hand.
  7. Test the drain pump electrically if the mechanical path is clear but the washer still will not drain. Use a multimeter to check for continuity across the pump motor terminals and inspect wiring connections to the pump for damage or corrosion.
  8. Inspect the pressure system by locating the pressure switch or transducer (usually mounted high on the tub or control-board area) and its attached air hose. Check for kinks, cracks, or blockages in the hose and clean the air trap chamber if accessible.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Maytag washer drain pump filterAmazon | The coin trap or filter insert that catches debris before the pump. Verify your model number for the correct filter design.
Maytag front-load washer drain pump assemblyAmazon | Complete pump motor and housing. Replace if the impeller is damaged or the motor does not run when powered.
Washer pressure switch or pressure transducerAmazon | Analog or digital pressure sensor that reports water level to the control. Match your model and control-board type.
Drain hose and clampsAmazon | Replacement corrugated or smooth-bore hose and stainless clamps if the original hose is split, kinked permanently, or clogged.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you have cleaned the filter and drain path, confirmed the hoses are clear, and the washer still displays F21 and will not drain. A technician can safely test the drain pump motor under power, measure pressure-switch signals with diagnostic tools, and trace wiring faults in the harness or control board. Also call for help if you are uncomfortable working with electrical components, if the pump or pressure switch requires removal from inside the cabinet, or if the fault returns immediately after a successful manual drain and filter cleaning.
