Maytag Washer F20 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F20 means the washer didn't fill with water in time. Check that both hot and cold water valves are open and hoses aren't kinked.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)
Est. time 15-60 min
Tools Multimeter , nut driver, screwdrivers

Maytag Washer F20 Error Code — What It Means

The F20 code (sometimes displayed as FH) on Whirlpool-built Maytag front-load washers signals a water supply fault. The machine did not detect the expected amount of water entering the tub within the allowed fill time. This is almost always a supply-path problem, not a drain issue.

The washer needs both hot and cold water feeds connected and turned on to fill correctly, even if you select a cold-only wash. When the machine can’t sense adequate flow, it stops the cycle and throws F20 to prevent damage or a failed wash.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Turn off the washer and verify both hot and cold water shut-off valves at the wall are turned fully counterclockwise to the open position.
  2. Inspect both inlet hoses from the wall to the washer for kinks, twists, or crushing, and straighten or reroute any restricted sections.
  3. Shut off water at the wall, disconnect both inlet hoses at the washer, and remove the small mesh screens from each inlet valve port with needle-nose pliers, then rinse the screens under running water to clear sediment.
  4. Reinstall the screens and hoses, turn water back on, and check for any flood-stop or automatic shutoff devices between the wall and washer that may have closed.
  5. Clear the error code by pressing Pause or Cancel twice, or unplug the washer for five minutes, plug back in, select a cycle, and press Start.
  6. Run a rinse-and-spin cycle to confirm the washer fills normally and the F20 does not return.
  7. If the code repeats after confirming good supply pressure and clean screens, the water inlet valve or flowmeter inside the washer has likely failed and requires component-level testing or replacement.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Water inlet valve screensAmazon | Small mesh filters that press into the inlet ports on the back of the washer.
Water inlet hosesAmazon | Reinforced fill hoses that connect wall supply to washer, replace if kinked or cracked.
Water inlet valve assemblyAmazon | Solenoid valve that opens and closes to control hot and cold fill, replace if screens are damaged or valve does not open.
Water flowmeterAmazon | Flow sensor that tells the control board water is entering, replace when supply is good but F20 persists.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you have confirmed both water supplies are on, hoses are clear, inlet screens are clean, and household pressure is adequate, but the F20 code still appears after clearing and retesting. Diagnosing a faulty flowmeter or inlet valve requires disassembly of the washer cabinet, live voltage checks at the valve, and sometimes a multimeter to test the flow sensor. If you are not comfortable working inside the machine or around live electrical components while water is connected, professional service is the safer choice.
