Maytag Dryer Won’t Start — What’s Happening

A Maytag dryer that won’t start is not a fault code. It is a symptom that means the machine is failing to enter a cycle because one or more start interlocks or electrical conditions are not satisfied. Maytag’s own troubleshooting begins with the Start button, power supply, control lock, and door latch before moving to internal component checks.

The dryer will not operate unless the door is fully closed and latched, the controls are unlocked, and the Start button is held for the correct duration (typically 2 to 5 seconds depending on the model). If those conditions are met and the machine still does not respond, the most common underlying failures are the door switch or latch, the thermal fuse, the start switch, a tripped breaker or lack of power, and on some models a broken drive belt or a defective timer or control board.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify that household circuit breakers or fuses for the dryer are intact and reset. Cycle breakers off and back on, and consult an electrician if supply problems persist.
  2. Confirm that the control lock or child lock function is turned off according to your model’s control panel instructions.
  3. Press and hold the Start button for 2 to 5 seconds (as specified for your model) with a dry finger if using touch controls, and make sure the door is firmly closed and latched.
  4. Inspect the door latch for clothing blocking closure or physical damage, then test the door switch for continuity and proper actuation. Replace the switch if it does not close the circuit when the door is shut.
  5. Locate and test the thermal fuse for continuity. If it is open, replace the fuse and inspect and clean the entire venting system for lint blockage or restricted airflow that caused the overheating.
  6. Test the start switch for continuity and function. Replace the switch if it has failed.
  7. If your model is belt-driven, remove the front or top panel to inspect the drive belt for breaks or complete failure. Replace the belt if needed.
  8. If all interlocks, switches, and the belt pass testing, move to diagnosis of the timer or control board and inspect the wiring harness for opens or bad connections.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you are not comfortable working with 120 V or 240 V dryer circuits, if voltage testing at the outlet shows supply problems that require an electrician, or if all basic interlocks and common components pass your tests but the dryer still will not start. A technician has the tools and experience to trace control board signals, diagnose timer faults, and handle wiring harness issues safely.
