Maytag Dryer Idler Pulley Replacement — What This Part Does
The idler pulley is part of your dryer’s belt-tension system. It keeps the drive belt tight against the drum and motor shaft so the drum rotates properly when the motor runs. The pulley rides on a bearing or bushing, and over time that bearing wears out or the pulley wheel itself cracks or seizes.
When the pulley fails, belt tension drops and the drum either slips, rotates slowly, or stops turning altogether. You’ll often hear squealing or grinding as the worn bearing drags. This is a mechanical failure, not an electronic fault code, and the fix is to replace the pulley assembly and verify correct belt routing.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Squealing or squeaking during the cycle A worn pulley bearing causes high-pitched noise as the pulley drags instead of spinning freely.
- Grinding or rumbling sound A seized or damaged pulley scrapes against the belt or shaft, producing a rough grinding noise.
- Drum won’t turn or turns very slowly Weak or broken tension from a failed pulley lets the belt slip, so the drum doesn’t spin even though the motor runs.
- Drum rotates too freely when unplugged If the drum spins with almost no resistance by hand when the machine is off, the idler pulley is not holding proper belt tension.
- Belt came off or is visibly loose A broken tension spring or pulley assembly allows the belt to fall off the drum or motor shaft.
- Visible pulley damage or wobble Cracks, chips, or side-to-side wobble on the pulley wheel indicate the part must be replaced.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the dryer from the wall and shut off the gas supply valve if your model is gas-fired.
- Remove the screws at the bottom of the front panel, tilt the panel forward, disconnect the door-switch wire harness, and lift the panel away to access the front bulkhead.
- Remove the screws securing the front bulkhead and lift the bulkhead off to expose the drum and belt path.
- Reach under the drum, push the idler pulley upward to release belt tension, then slip the belt off the motor shaft and pulley wheel.
- Lift the drum out of the cabinet and set it aside on a clean surface.
- Use needle-nose pliers to remove the C-clip (retaining clip) and washer from the idler shaft, then slide the old pulley off the bracket.
- Wipe the idler shaft clean, slide the new pulley wheel onto the shaft, reinstall the washer and C-clip, and confirm the pulley spins freely.
- Set the drum back into the cabinet and route the belt around the drum, then under and around the motor pulley, and finally over the idler pulley in the correct zig-zag path for your model.
- Rotate the drum by hand several full turns to verify the belt tracks straight, the drum spins smoothly, and all rollers and pulleys turn without binding or noise before you reinstall the front bulkhead and panel.
The Part You Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Maytag dryer idler pulley | Amazon | OEM part number example is Whirlpool/Maytag 31001344. Find your exact part number on the model and serial plate inside the dryer door or on the frame, then cross-reference at an appliance parts supplier. |
| Retaining clip (C-clip) and washer | Amazon | Usually included with the replacement pulley or sold separately if the original clip or washer is damaged. |
| Dryer drive belt (optional) | Amazon | Replace the belt at the same time if it shows cracks, fraying, or glazing, or if you are performing a full maintenance kit repair that includes rollers and belt. |

When to Call a Pro
Call a tech if you are uncomfortable removing the front panel and drum, if the belt path for your specific model is unclear, or if the drum still binds or makes noise after you install the new pulley and verify correct belt routing. On gas dryers, have a qualified technician handle any work that involves disconnecting or servicing the burner assembly or gas connections.
