Maytag Dryer F70 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F70 means the control panel and main board lost communication. Power-reset first, then check wire connectors if it returns.

Maytag Dryer F70 Error Code — What It Means

The F70 code indicates a communication fault between your dryer’s user interface board (the control panel you touch) and the main control board inside the cabinet. The two electronic boards cannot exchange signals properly. Maytag treats this as an electronic glitch rather than a mechanical dryer problem, which is why the official first step is always a power-down reset.

Because Maytag uses several dryer platforms, the exact board names vary by model. Some older documents refer to a CCU or MCU instead of a simple UI-and-main-board pair, but the practical meaning stays the same: the control system is not talking to itself and the machine will not run until communication is restored.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Verify your exact model number on the data tag inside the door or on the back panel, since Maytag and Whirlpool parts and fault logic vary by platform.
  2. Switch off both circuit breakers (dryers usually run on two breakers) or unplug the machine, wait five minutes, then restore power and start a timed dry cycle to see if the F70 reappears.
  3. Disconnect power again and remove the console or top panel to expose the user interface board and trace the wiring harness down to the main control board in the lower cabinet.
  4. Inspect every connector on the UI board and main board for partially backed-out plugs, bent or corroded pins, and cracked insulation, then unplug and firmly reseat each connector until it clicks.
  5. Test suspect wires for continuity using a multimeter if you see physical damage or discoloration, and replace the harness if you find an open circuit.
  6. Replace the user interface board first if all connectors are secure and wiring tests good, since the console board is the more common communication failure point.
  7. Replace the main control board if a new UI board does not resolve the F70, then run a full timed dry cycle to confirm the code stays cleared.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
User interface board (console control board)Amazon | Match the part number on your existing board label or use your full model number when ordering.
Main control board (electronic control board)Amazon | Often labeled CCU or MCU on older platforms. Confirm compatibility with your dryer’s serial-number range.
Wiring harness (UI-to-main-board cable)Amazon | Order the harness assembly if you find broken conductors or melted insulation that cannot be safely spliced.

When to Call a Pro

If the power reset does not clear the F70 or you are uncomfortable working inside a 240-volt appliance, call a technician. Board-level diagnosis requires safe access to live and stored voltage, and misidentifying which board failed will cost you the price of an unnecessary part plus a second service call. A qualified appliance repair tech can isolate the fault in one visit, often by swapping a known-good board temporarily, and will also catch less common issues like a damaged bulkhead grommet that has chafed through multiple wires at once.
