Maytag Dryer Drum Glides Replacement - Signs & How-To

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Worn drum glides cause squealing, rubbing, or binding when the dryer runs. Replacing the front glide kit stops the noise and lets the drum spin freely again.

Maytag Dryer Drum Glides Replacement — What This Part Does

Drum glides are low-friction support surfaces mounted on the front bulkhead that let the dryer drum rotate smoothly against the cabinet. They’re usually made of nylon or plastic with a cork or fiber backing pad, and they bear the weight of the drum as it spins. Over time, normal use wears down the glide material, the pad compresses, or the rivets holding the assembly can fail, causing the drum to drag or rub metal-on-metal at the front opening.

When glides wear out or break, the drum loses its smooth support and starts binding against the bulkhead. This creates loud squealing or scraping noises, increases friction enough to stop the drum from turning, or causes uneven rotation. Because this is a mechanical wear condition and not an electronic fault, you won’t see any error codes on the control panel. The only fix is to replace the worn glide components with a new kit.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet to cut all power before you start any disassembly.
  2. Remove the lower access panel (usually two screws at the bottom front), then open the door and remove the front panel screws around the door opening and disconnect the door switch wire harness.
  3. Lift the main top by releasing the clips or removing the screws at the rear, then prop it up or remove it completely to access the front bulkhead.
  4. Remove the front bulkhead by taking out the mounting screws that secure it to the cabinet sides and lifting it away to expose the drum and glide mounting area.
  5. Inspect the old glide and pad for wear, cracks, or missing material, then remove the old glide by unscrewing the fasteners or drilling out the rivets with a 1/8 inch drill bit if it’s a riveted design.
  6. Clean any debris or worn pad material from the bulkhead mounting surface, then position the new glide pad (cork or fiber side against the bulkhead) and insert the glide tabs into the bulkhead slots.
  7. Secure the new glide assembly with the screws or rivets included in the replacement kit, making sure the glide sits flush and centered in the drum support area.
  8. Reinstall the front bulkhead and align it carefully so the drum sits evenly in the opening without rubbing, then reconnect the door switch wires and reattach the front panel.
  9. Replace the main top and lower access panel, plug the dryer back in, and run a short test cycle to verify the drum spins smoothly without noise or binding.

When to Call a Pro

If you’re not comfortable drilling out rivets, handling the bulkhead removal, or aligning the drum during reassembly, call a tech. Incorrect glide installation or poor drum alignment can cause new noise or binding problems right after the repair. Also, if you find other worn drum support components like worn rear drum rollers, felt seals, or a damaged idler pulley while you have the dryer apart, a pro can replace all the worn parts in one visit and get the machine running quietly again.
