Maytag Dryer Drive Motor Replacement — What This Part Does

The drive motor turns the drum and blower fan in your Maytag dryer. It receives signals from the main electronic control board and spins continuously during the dry cycle. Motors fail from worn bearings, overheating from blocked vents, or internal winding shorts.

When the motor quits, the control board detects the loss of feedback and posts an F26 error code on models with electronic controls. Older mechanical-timer models simply won’t start or will hum but not spin. Replacing the failed motor restores drum rotation and airflow.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet and shut off the gas supply valve if your model uses gas.
  2. Pull the dryer away from the wall for full access to the rear and sides.
  3. Remove the front bulkhead or access panel per your model’s service manual to reach the drum and motor.
  4. Release belt tension by pushing the idler pulley toward the motor, then lift the belt off the motor pulley and drum.
  5. Disconnect the wire harness from the drive motor and inspect both the connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, or damage.
  6. Unbolt the motor from its mounting bracket (typically two or three hex-head screws), then slide the motor out.
  7. Transfer the pulley from the old motor to the new motor by loosening the set screw, sliding the pulley onto the new motor shaft, and positioning it 3/8 inch from the motor support before tightening the set screw.
  8. Mount the new motor onto the bracket, reconnect the wire harness, and loop the belt around the motor pulley, idler pulley, and drum.
  9. Reinstall the front bulkhead or panel, push the dryer back into place, plug in power, and run a test cycle to verify drum rotation and normal operation.

When to Call a Pro

If you find pinched or melted wiring between the main control board and motor, call a technician to trace the short and repair the harness safely. Gas dryer owners who are unfamiliar with moving the appliance and disconnecting the gas line should hire a pro to avoid leaks. If replacing the motor and inspecting all wiring does not clear the F26 code, the main electronic control board may also be faulty and require professional diagnosis with a multimeter.
