Maytag Dishwasher E15 Error Code — What It Means

The E15 code signals that your Maytag dishwasher has detected water in the bottom base pan or leak tray under the tub. This is a leak-protection fault. The machine shuts down immediately to prevent flooding your floor. The code does not mean a simple drain blockage or heater problem. It means water has escaped from the wash system and pooled where it should never be, tripping a float or sensor switch in the base.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Shut off power and water. Flip the breaker for the dishwasher and close the hot-water supply valve under the sink before you begin any work.
  2. Remove the toe kick and inspect the base pan. Pull off the lower kick plate and look for standing water, dampness, or mineral deposits in the plastic base tray under the tub.
  3. Dry the base completely. Use towels and a wet-dry vacuum to remove all water, or carefully tilt the machine forward over cardboard to drain the pan, then dry it thoroughly before moving on.
  4. Find the leak source. Check the door gasket, inlet valve area, drain pump, sump assembly, all hoses and clamps, and the connection at the sink for drips, crust, or spray marks.
  5. Verify drain routing and air gap. Make sure the drain hose is looped above the sink connection, not kinked, and that the disposal or drain line is clear so water cannot back up.
  6. Test or replace the leak sensor. If the base is bone dry but the code persists, locate the float or water-level switch in the base pan and check that it moves freely and is not corroded or stuck.
  7. Run a test cycle and watch for leaks. After replacing the failed part and confirming the base is dry, restore power and water, start a short rinse cycle, and observe the repair area closely before closing up.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Door gasket or tub sealAmazon | Match to your model number. Replace if torn, hard, or visibly leaking during the wash cycle.
Inlet water valveAmazon | Common leak point at the threaded connections. Buy the OEM valve for your Maytag platform.
Drain pump assembly or seal kitAmazon | If the pump body or shaft seal is dripping. Some models offer seal kits, others require the full pump.
Base leak sensor or float switchAmazon | Only if the base is dry but the code will not clear. Verify part number from your tech sheet.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you cannot safely access the base pan, if you find water but cannot locate the leak after inspecting all visible hoses and seals, or if the code returns immediately after drying and you suspect a hidden tub crack or failed sump casting. A technician has leak-detection dye, pressure-test tools, and access to model-specific service manuals with sensor test values. Also call if you are uncomfortable working with water and electrical connections at the same time or if your dishwasher is still under warranty.
