Most often caused by Child Lock being active or the door not fully closed. Disable CL or check the door latch and seal for obstructions.

LG Washer Won’t Start — What’s Happening

When an LG washer won’t start, you’re dealing with a symptom rather than a single error code. The machine may be completely unresponsive, light up but refuse to begin a cycle, or display a code like CL (Child Lock) or dE (door error). These all prevent the washer from initiating normal operation.

If no code appears on the display, the problem is usually a start-interlock issue, a power interruption, or a control board fault. When a code does show, CL means Child Lock is engaged and blocking cycle changes, while dE signals the door is not closing or locking properly. Both conditions stop the washer from running until resolved.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Note the exact symptom: whether the washer is completely dead, lights are on but it won’t start, or a code like CL, dE, or LE is displayed.
  2. Check power to the unit by confirming the outlet is live, the plug is seated firmly, and the household breaker has not tripped. Avoid using extension cords.
  3. Perform an LG reset by unplugging the washer for 30 seconds, then reconnect power. On some models, you can also trip the breaker, hold START/PAUSE for five seconds, then restore power and retry.
  4. If CL is displayed, disable Child Lock using the button combination for your model (consult your manual, as the exact keys vary by series).
  5. Inspect the door and gasket for any clothing, debris, or gasket folds caught in the seal, then close the door firmly to verify it latches with a solid click.
  6. If the door appears closed but the washer still won’t start or shows dE, test the door lock assembly electrically or replace it if the latch does not engage.
  7. If the washer powers on but the drum does not move or an LE code appears, turn the drum by hand to check for binding, then access the stator and rotor. Test stator phase-to-phase resistance (expect 5 to 15 ohms with all readings within 1 ohm of each other). Replace the stator if readings are out of spec.
  8. If all door, power, and motor checks pass but the cycle still will not initiate, inspect and test the main control board for failed start relay or processor faults.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Door lock assemblyAmazon | Replaces failed interlock switch or latch for dE codes and door-related no-start conditions.
Stator assemblyAmazon | Required when phase resistance is out of specification or windings test open on direct-drive models.
Main control boardAmazon | Needed when all inputs are correct but the washer will not send start or motor commands.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if the washer remains unresponsive after verifying power, performing a reset, and checking the door system. Motor and control board diagnosis requires disassembly, live voltage work, and multimeter testing of stator windings and board circuits. If you see an LE motor code or the drum binds when turned by hand, a pro should inspect the rotor, stator, bearings, and spider arm for mechanical damage before you invest in parts.
