LG Washer Won't Agitate - Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

A stripped wash plate hub or failed hall sensor on direct-drive models is usually the culprit. Check for free-spinning plates and test motor sensors.

LG Washer Won’t Agitate — What’s Happening

When an LG washer won’t agitate, it means the machine fills and locks but the wash plate, agitator, or basket does not move during the wash portion of the cycle. On LG direct-drive models, this usually points to a problem with the motor position-sensing system or the stator. On some top-load designs, it often indicates a stripped mechanical drive interface between the motor and the wash plate or agitator.

Because LG does not assign a specific error code to “no agitation,” diagnosis depends on the drive type and model. The washer may complete other cycle steps normally but simply fail to drive the tub when washing should begin. This symptom is mechanical or electrical, not a drain or fill issue.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Run a test wash cycle and confirm the washer fills, locks, and then fails to move the wash plate or basket during the wash step (not earlier in the cycle).
  2. On top-load models, manually try to spin the wash plate or agitator by hand with the machine off and unplugged; if it spins freely when it should be locked to the drive shaft, the wash plate hub or drive block is stripped.
  3. Unplug the washer and access the motor and position sensor (usually below the tub on direct-drive models); inspect the stator, rotor, and hall sensor wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, or looseness.
  4. Check all harness connectors at the motor, position sensor, and main control board for broken conductors, pushed-back pins, or corrosion.
  5. If the model uses a direct-drive motor, test the hall sensor and stator windings for continuity and resistance according to the service manual for your model (specific values are not universal across LG models).
  6. If mechanical drive parts and motor-side components pass inspection and electrical tests, suspect a failed main control board or motor control module that is not sending the correct output to drive agitation.
  7. If your washer is still under warranty or if motor/control board testing is unclear, contact LG service or a qualified technician before replacing high-cost electrical parts.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Wash plate or agitator assemblyAmazon | For top-load models with a stripped hub; order by exact LG model number.
Hall sensor (rotor position sensor)Amazon | Common on direct-drive models; verify connector and wiring first.
Stator assemblyAmazon | For direct-drive motors; test windings before replacing.
Main control board or motor control moduleAmazon | Replace only after confirming motor and mechanical parts are good.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you are not comfortable disassembling the washer to access the motor, stator, or control board, or if electrical testing of the hall sensor and stator is beyond your skill level. Also call a pro if you have replaced the obvious mechanical parts (wash plate or drive block) and the washer still will not agitate, since the fault may be in the control or motor module. If your LG washer is still under warranty, contact LG or an authorized service center before attempting any repairs yourself.
