LG Dryer Burning Smell — What’s Happening
A burning smell in an LG dryer is a symptom, not an error code. LG says a burning odor during initial use can be normal in a new dryer because chemicals or insulation in the motor, compressor, or heater can emit odor as they warm up. If the dryer is not new and the smell persists, LG recommends contacting LG Customer Service, because the odor can come from foreign material, detergent residue, or an internal issue.
The most common field causes are lint buildup, blocked venting, a slipping belt, overheated motor, stuck rollers or idler, blower problems, heating element overheating, thermostat or thermal fuse faults, wiring faults, or control board damage. Unplug the dryer immediately if the smell is strong, smoky, or electrical.
Most Likely Causes
- Lint accumulation in filter housing or cabinet Lint in the lint filter housing, inside the cabinet, or around the heater area can overheat and smell like burning.
- Restricted airflow from clogged or kinked vent hose A crushed, kinked, or clogged vent hose can raise cabinet temperature and create a burning odor.
- Drive belt slip from worn or frayed belt A worn or frayed belt can slip and generate a rubber-burning smell.
- Idler pulley, drum roller, or blower wheel friction Stuck or worn rollers, idler pulley, or blower wheel can create friction or belt slip and a burning odor.
- Motor overheating or failing internal components An overheating motor or failing internal motor parts can produce an electrical or hot smell.
- Heating element or burner area overheating Overheating heating element or a failed temperature control component can create localized heat damage and odor.
- Electrical faults in wiring, terminal block, or control board Damaged terminal block, wiring, door switch, or control board can smell burnt or smoky.
How to Diagnose and Fix
- Unplug the dryer and stop operation immediately if the smell is strong, smoky, or electrical.
- Inspect and clean the lint filter and the lint filter housing or slot thoroughly.
- Inspect the vent system from the dryer outlet to the outside termination for crushing, sharp bends, loose clamps, or blockage, and clean the vent path if restricted.
- Check that the blower wheel turns freely, the exhaust path is clear, and the cabinet is not loaded with lint.
- Inspect the drum drive system for belt condition, idler pulley rotation, and drum rollers for free movement or friction damage.
- Inspect the heater area and temperature controls for signs of overheating, burn marks, or lint contact, and test suspect thermal components per the service literature for the specific model.
- Inspect wiring and electrical terminations for discoloration, melting, or loose or burnt connectors, including the terminal block and control board.
- If the odor remains after cleaning and mechanical checks, replace the defective component identified by inspection and testing, and verify proper airflow and operation on a test cycle.

When to Call a Pro
Call a qualified appliance technician if the smell persists after cleaning the lint filter and vent system, if you see burn marks or melted wiring, or if the odor is electrical or smoky. Heating element, motor, control board, and gas burner or igniter work on gas models should be handled by a professional with the service manual and test equipment for your specific LG model. Stop using the dryer until the source of the burning smell is identified and repaired.
