⚡ Quick Answer

Inlet filter clog is the most common cause. Check the screen inside the water valve connection and clean debris out under low pressure.

LG Dishwasher Stuck Mid Cycle — What’s Happening

When your LG dishwasher stops partway through a wash, it’s not a generic failure. The machine has detected a specific condition that prevents it from continuing safely. Most units will flash an error code on the display (IE for water inlet, OE for drainage, bE for excessive suds, or 2H for control board issues), though sometimes the machine stops silently if the door latch loses its seal.

The dishwasher stops mid-cycle to protect itself from damage. If water can’t fill the tub in time, the wash pump would run dry and burn out. If water can’t drain, the tub could overflow. If foam builds up, it can leak past seals and damage sensors. The machine is doing what it’s designed to do, but you need to find out which condition triggered the stop.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Turn off power at the breaker or unplug the unit, then wait 15 minutes to clear any transient board errors before proceeding.
  2. Check the display for an error code (IE, OE, bE, or 2H) and write it down so you know which system to inspect first.
  3. Shut off the water supply valve under the sink, disconnect the inlet hose from the back of the dishwasher, and pull out the small mesh screen filter inside the valve port with needle-nose pliers.
  4. Rinse the screen under low water pressure (do not use high pressure or you’ll tear the mesh) and inspect the hose for kinks or flat spots along its length.
  5. Pull the dishwasher forward if needed and trace the drain hose to the sink drain or garbage disposal, checking for loops that sag below the connection point or any visible blockages.
  6. If you have a garbage disposal, confirm the knockout plug was removed from the dishwasher inlet port (shine a flashlight into the side port and look for a plastic disc).
  7. Remove the lower spray arm and the filter assembly in the tub floor, then check the sump area for broken glass, bones, or debris around the drain pump impeller.
  8. Test the door latch by opening and closing the door while listening for a distinct click from the solenoid, and check that the strike plate on the tub frame is not bent or loose.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Water inlet valve assemblyAmazon | Includes solenoid and internal screen, direct LG replacement if valve body is cracked or solenoid coil tests open
Drain pump motorAmazon | If impeller is intact but motor hums without spinning or shows continuity fault on windings
Door latch and strike assemblyAmazon | Solenoid and plastic latch hook sold together as a kit for most LG models

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

If the inlet screen is clean, the hose is straight, and water pressure at the valve is strong but you still get an IE code, the inlet valve solenoid itself has likely failed and needs replacement. If you clear all drain obstructions and the pump still won’t evacuate water (or you hear a hum but no water movement), the drain pump motor is burned out. Control board diagnostics for a 2H error or a no-code freeze require a multimeter and familiarity with testing door switch continuity and board relay outputs, so most homeowners should call a tech at that point. Any situation where you smell burning plastic or see water pooling under the unit during a cycle means you should stop immediately and get a professional out to prevent further damage.
