Kenmore Washer Not Dispensing Detergent — What’s Happening

When your Kenmore washer does not dispense detergent, the detergent you loaded into the drawer or cup stays there instead of being flushed into the tub at the correct time. This is almost always a mechanical or water-delivery problem, not an error code. The dispenser relies on a timed water flush that flows through the dispenser cup and siphon path to carry detergent into the drum.

If that water flow is blocked, too weak, or the dispenser hardware is stuck or clogged, the detergent will not move. The same system handles bleach and fabric softener, so you may notice similar problems in those compartments. In some models, an electrically controlled solenoid or actuator opens a valve to release water into the dispenser, and a failure there will also stop the flush.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Confirm the symptom by running a cycle and checking whether detergent remains in the drawer or cup after the fill and wash portions, and note whether bleach or softener compartments also fail to empty.
  2. Remove the dispenser drawer fully by pulling it out and releasing any retaining tab or lever, then soak the drawer and siphon inserts in hot water and scrub away all detergent residue and mineral deposits with a brush.
  3. Inspect the washer-side dispenser cavity and clear any blockages in the water inlet holes and internal passages using a soft brush, toothpick, or small bottle brush.
  4. Check that both hot and cold water supply valves at the wall are fully open and verify that household water pressure is adequate by running a faucet nearby.
  5. Run a short cycle or rinse and observe whether water actually flows into the dispenser during the fill period, watching for weak or absent flow that points to an inlet valve or supply issue.
  6. If your washer has a dispenser solenoid or actuator, unplug the machine and use a multimeter to measure the coil resistance, replacing the component if it reads open, shorted, or far out of the expected range for similar models.
  7. Verify that all siphon inserts, caps, and covers are installed correctly and fully seated in the drawer, as improper assembly can stop siphoning and leave detergent behind.
  8. Reassemble the clean drawer and housing, then test with a small amount of liquid detergent to confirm proper dispensing before returning to normal loads.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Dispenser drawer assemblyAmazon | Replace if cracked, warped, or permanently encrusted with detergent buildup that cleaning cannot remove.
Water inlet valveAmazon | Needed when the valve does not supply sufficient water to the dispenser circuit despite normal supply pressure and open valves.
Dispenser solenoid or actuatorAmazon | For models with electrically controlled dispensers, replace if resistance test shows open or shorted coil.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if cleaning the dispenser and checking water supply do not resolve the problem, if you measure a failed dispenser solenoid but are not comfortable with disassembly and wiring work, or if the inlet valve needs replacement and you do not have the tools or experience to access internal plumbing and electrical connections safely. A pro can also diagnose less common issues such as control board faults that prevent the dispenser flush cycle from running at the correct time.
