⚡ Quick Answer

Usually a burned-out bulb or LED module. Remove the lens cover, inspect the bulb, and swap in a replacement rated for your model.

Kenmore Refrigerator Light Not Working — What’s Happening

A Kenmore refrigerator light not working means the interior lamp circuit is open somewhere. This is not a fault code. The refrigerator itself runs normally, but the light does not turn on when you open the door. The problem lies in the lamp circuit rather than in refrigeration performance.

The most common causes are a failed bulb or LED module, a stuck or defective door switch, a loose or corroded socket connection, or damaged wiring between the switch and lamp. Less often, the control board fails if your model uses a board-driven LED circuit.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Confirm the refrigerator is plugged in and the outlet has power by checking that the compressor and display (if present) are working.
  2. Remove the light lens cover or shield inside the compartment and inspect the bulb or LED module for blackening, broken filament, or visible damage.
  3. Swap in a known-good replacement bulb or LED assembly rated for your model to isolate whether the light source is the problem.
  4. Locate the door switch (usually on the door frame or compartment wall) and press the plunger by hand to verify it clicks and changes position freely.
  5. Test the door switch with a multimeter set to continuity: it should open and close the circuit as you press and release the plunger.
  6. Inspect the light socket and wiring harness for burnt terminals, loose connectors, or damaged insulation, and clean or reconnect as needed.
  7. Measure voltage at the light socket with the door switch depressed (light circuit on). If voltage is present but the lamp does not light, replace the lamp. If no voltage is present, trace back through the switch and control board.
  8. If the bulb, switch, socket, and wiring all test good but the light still does not work, evaluate the control board and replace it if the board drives the lighting circuit.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Refrigerator light bulb or LED moduleAmazon | Match wattage and base type to your Kenmore model number.
Refrigerator door switchAmazon | Also called the light switch, usually a plunger type mounted near the door frame.
Light socket assemblyAmazon | Includes the bulb holder and terminals if corroded or cracked.
Main control boardAmazon | Only needed if your model uses board-driven LED lighting and upstream components test good.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable working with live voltage or removing interior panels. Also call if you have replaced the bulb, tested the door switch, and inspected all visible wiring but the light still does not work. Tracing voltage through a multi-zone harness or replacing a control board requires diagnostic tools and experience with refrigerator electrical systems.
