⚡ Quick Answer

Most often caused by a clogged water filter or frozen fill tube blocking water flow. Replace the filter or thaw the line to restore operation.

Kenmore Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working — What’s Happening

When a Kenmore refrigerator ice maker stops working, it means the unit is not receiving water, not freezing properly, or the ice maker assembly itself has failed. This is a symptom, not a single fault code, and points to one of four broad problem areas: water supply issues, inadequate freezer temperature, a failed ice maker module or thermostat, or a wiring and controls fault.

In practical terms, you will either see no ice production at all, partial cubes, or the ice maker will not cycle through its harvest routine. The root cause is almost always in the water delivery path or the freezer environment, though internal module failures do occur on older units.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Disconnect power to the refrigerator and shut off the water supply valve before opening any panels or disconnecting lines.
  2. Check the freezer temperature with a thermometer and confirm it is running near 0°F, because if the compartment is too warm you must correct the cooling issue before chasing ice maker faults.
  3. Inspect the fill tube and water line behind the ice maker for kinks or ice blockages, and thaw any frozen tubing with warm towels or a hair dryer on low heat.
  4. Remove and replace the water filter, or bypass it if the model allows, to rule out flow restriction in the filter or housing.
  5. Disconnect the supply line at the inlet valve and flow water into a bucket to verify adequate household pressure (at least 20 psi) and rule out a kinked or crushed external line.
  6. Test the water inlet valve solenoid with a multimeter for continuity, and replace the valve if the coil reads open or if the valve does not click when energized during a test cycle.
  7. Check the ice maker switch position and manually trigger the test or harvest function (if available) to see whether the module cycles and calls for water.
  8. Inspect the wiring harness at the door hinge and all connectors for broken, pinched, or corroded wires, and repair or replace damaged sections as needed.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Water inlet valveAmazon | Solenoid-operated valve that opens to fill the ice maker when energized by the module.
Refrigerator water filterAmazon | Inline cartridge that removes sediment and chlorine but restricts flow when clogged or past its service life.
Ice maker assemblyAmazon | Complete module with thermostat, heater, and motor; replaced as a unit when internal components fail.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you have verified good water supply pressure, confirmed the freezer is cold enough, replaced the filter, and thawed the fill tube but the ice maker still will not cycle or fill. Technicians have the test equipment to energize the inlet valve directly, measure solenoid resistance against factory specs, and safely replace the ice maker module and harness on models where the wiring runs through tight hinge areas. If the refrigerator is also not cooling properly, the underlying sealed-system or defrost fault requires diagnosis and refrigerant work that only a licensed tech should perform.
