Kenmore Dryer Drive Belt Replacement — What This Part Does
The drive belt is a long, flat belt with ribs or grooves that wraps around the drum and transfers rotation from the motor pulley to the drum. When the motor starts, the belt pulls the drum around so your clothes tumble. Over time, normal wear causes the belt to stretch, become brittle, or break completely, which stops the drum from turning even though the motor still runs.
Most Kenmore dryers (especially Whirlpool-built models) use a ribbed belt roughly 1/4 inch wide and 88 to 93 inches long, depending on the model. The belt rides over the motor pulley and around an idler pulley that keeps tension. If the belt breaks, slips off track, or wears out, the drum sits still and your laundry doesn’t dry.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Motor runs but drum does not turn You hear the blower and motor running, but the drum stays completely still when you start a cycle.
- Thumping or loose rumbling noise A broken or off-track belt can flap against the cabinet or cause the drum to wobble instead of spinning smoothly.
- Drum turns very easily by hand When the dryer is off and you reach in and spin the drum, it rotates with almost no resistance because the belt is no longer wrapped around it.
- Visible broken or missing belt You open the cabinet and see a snapped belt lying on the blower housing or hanging loose inside.
- Clothes remain wet after a full cycle Without drum rotation, heat builds up but clothes never tumble, so they stay damp or soaked.
- Belt looks cracked, glazed, or stretched If you inspect the belt and find cracks, a shiny glazed surface, or noticeable stretch, it will fail soon and should be replaced.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the dryer or shut off power at the circuit breaker, then pull the dryer away from the wall for access.
- Remove the lint screen, then unscrew the two screws inside the lint-screen housing to release the top panel or front bracket.
- Lift the top of the cabinet up and prop it open, then disconnect the door-switch wire harness and remove the screws holding the front panel so you can swing it forward and off.
- Inspect the old belt around the drum, idler pulley, and motor pulley, then note the routing path and remove the broken or worn belt from the cabinet.
- Loop the new belt around the drum with the ribbed or grooved side against the drum surface, then reach under the drum and route the belt around the idler pulley and over the motor pulley in the same path as the original.
- Check that the belt is not twisted and sits flat on all pulleys, then hand-rotate the drum a few full turns to confirm the belt tracks smoothly without slipping or binding.
- Inspect the idler pulley and drum support rollers while the cabinet is open to make sure they spin freely and are not worn or dragging.
- Reinstall the front panel and reconnect the door-switch harness, lower the top panel, replace the lint-housing screws, and reinstall the lint screen.
- Plug the dryer back in or restore power, then run a short test cycle to verify the drum spins correctly and the belt stays on track.

When to Call a Pro
If the new belt slips off repeatedly, the drum binds or wobbles after replacement, or you hear grinding from the idler pulley or motor, call a pro to inspect the idler assembly, drum rollers, and motor mount. Also call if you are uncomfortable working inside the cabinet or if your dryer has a sealed rear panel that requires special tools to open. A technician can also check whether worn drum rollers or a failing idler pulley caused premature belt failure and replace those components at the same time.
