⚡ Quick Answer

Usually a clogged or failed water inlet valve. Check the valve screen for debris and test the valve coil for around 1,400 ohms resistance.

Kenmore Dishwasher Won’t Fill With Water — What’s Happening

When your Kenmore dishwasher won’t fill with water, it means the machine is not allowing water into the tub at the start of a cycle. This symptom is typically caused by a mechanical blockage, a stuck safety device, an electrical failure in the fill circuit, or no incoming water supply.

The problem almost always traces back to the fill path itself rather than the wash pump. The fill circuit includes the water inlet valve, the float and float switch, the door latch and switch, the supply line and shutoff valve, and the control board or timer that sends power to the valve.

Most Likely Causes

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Shut off power at the breaker and turn off the household water supply valve under the sink or behind the dishwasher before beginning any work.
  2. Confirm the dishwasher door latches fully and that the household supply valve is open and the supply line is not kinked or blocked.
  3. Remove the lower access panel and locate the float inside the tub, then lift it by hand to make sure it moves freely up and down and is not stuck or blocked by debris.
  4. Test the float switch behind the lower panel with a multimeter set to continuity or R × 1, pressing the button to verify the switch changes from zero to infinity or vice versa.
  5. Inspect the water inlet valve behind the lower panel for damage or sediment clogging the inlet screen, then disconnect the valve and test the solenoid coil for approximately 1,400 ohms of resistance.
  6. Check for voltage at the inlet valve terminals during a fill command using a multimeter, and if no voltage is present, trace the circuit back to the door switch, timer, or main control board.
  7. Replace the component that tested faulty rather than swapping parts blindly, then restore power and water and run a test cycle to verify the dishwasher fills properly.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Water inlet valve assemblyAmazon | Includes solenoid coil and inlet screen; tested at around 1,400 ohms across the coil.
Float and float switchAmazon | The float rises with water level and the switch signals the control to stop or start fill.
Door latch and door switchAmazon | Prevents the machine from starting if the door is not securely closed.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

If you have verified the basics like water supply and door latch but are uncomfortable working with live voltage testing or tracing control-board circuits, call a pro. Likewise, if you have replaced the inlet valve and float switch but the machine still will not fill, the fault is likely in the wiring or main control board and requires a technician with a wiring diagram and proper diagnostic tools.
