⚡ Quick Answer

A clogged filter or blocked drain hose prevents the sump from evacuating. Remove power, clean the filter and sump, check the hose for kinks or clogs.

Kenmore Dishwasher Standing Water in Bottom — What’s Happening

Standing water at the end of a cycle means your Kenmore dishwasher did not complete its drain cycle. The machine normally pumps water out of the sump through a hose to your sink drain or garbage disposal. If water remains in the bottom, the drain path is blocked, the pump has failed, or water is flowing back into the tub after draining.

This is not a special fault code. It is a physical drain restriction, pump fault, or installation problem. Most field repairs involve clearing debris from the filter and sump, fixing a kinked or clogged drain hose, or correcting a garbage disposal connection issue. If the dishwasher drains during part of the cycle but leaves water only at the end, that points to a partial restriction or weak pump rather than a fill or control-board fault.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Turn off power at the breaker or unplug the unit before any service work.
  2. Remove the bottom dish rack and locate the cylindrical filter assembly in the floor of the tub.
  3. Twist or lift out the filter basket and wash it under running water to clear food particles, grease, and debris.
  4. Inspect the sump cavity below the filter for broken glass, labels, or large debris and wipe it clean.
  5. Pull the dishwasher forward and check the drain hose for kinks, crushing, or visible blockages along its length.
  6. Trace the drain hose to the sink or disposal connection and confirm it rises in a high loop before descending to the drain inlet.
  7. If connected to a garbage disposal, verify the knockout plug was removed from the disposal nipple (shine a light into the inlet and feel with a screwdriver if needed).
  8. Run a drain test by disconnecting the hose at the disposal or sink and directing it into a bucket, then start a drain cycle to see if the pump discharges water strongly (if it does, the blockage is in your sink plumbing, not the dishwasher).
  9. If the pump runs but flow is weak or absent, remove the pump cover plate inside the sump and check the impeller for jammed debris or damage, then test the pump motor for continuity and operation.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Dishwasher drain pump assemblyAmazon | Replace if the pump motor has failed electrically or the impeller housing is cracked.
Dishwasher filter assemblyAmazon | Order a new filter basket if the mesh is torn or the frame is broken.
Drain hoseAmazon | Replace if the hose is split, permanently kinked, or has internal buildup that cannot be flushed.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you have cleared the filter, checked the drain hose and disposal connection, and water still remains after a full cycle. A professional can test the drain pump electrically, inspect internal sump passages for hidden obstructions, and check for backflow or control-board faults that are not obvious from the outside. If you are uncomfortable disconnecting hoses, accessing the pump, or working around standing water and electrical connections, a service call will save time and prevent damage to the machine.
