⚡ Quick Answer

Usually caused by dish loading blocking the dispenser door. Check for obstructions, clean the cup and latch, then test the actuator.

Kenmore Dishwasher Not Dispensing Detergent — What’s Happening

The detergent cup door on your Kenmore dishwasher is supposed to open during the wash cycle to release detergent into the tub. If detergent stays in the cup after a cycle, the door may not have opened at all, may have been blocked by a dish or utensil, or may have opened but the detergent was not washed out by spray water.

This symptom is not tied to a specific error code. It points to either a mechanical problem with the dispenser door itself (broken latch, sticking hinge, or failed actuator) or a wash system issue (poor water circulation, clogged spray arms, or low water temperature) that prevents the detergent from dissolving and washing away even if the door does open.

Most Likely Causes

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Run a short wash cycle and open the door mid-cycle or at the end to confirm whether the dispenser door opened and whether detergent remains in the cup.
  2. Inspect the lower dish rack and area around the dispenser for any items that could block the lid from swinging open, then reload dishes to clear the dispenser zone.
  3. Clean the detergent cup, lid, latch area, and hinge or spring region thoroughly with warm water and a brush to remove any caked detergent or residue that could bind the mechanism.
  4. Check that the dishwasher is filling and spraying normally during the wash portion of the cycle, confirm the spray arms rotate freely, and inspect the filter and spray arm holes for clogs or debris.
  5. Disconnect power, remove the inner door panel as needed per your model, and inspect the wiring harness to the dispenser for loose connectors, corrosion, or damaged wires.
  6. With power off and the dispenser harness disconnected, measure resistance across the actuator terminals using a multimeter (expect roughly 1,400 to 2,800 ohms for a healthy actuator, infinite resistance indicates an open actuator and the dispenser assembly should be replaced).
  7. If the actuator tests good and wiring is intact, a qualified technician may perform live voltage checks during the dispense event to determine whether the control board is sending power to the dispenser.
  8. Replace the dispenser assembly if the lid, latch, spring, or actuator is broken, or replace the control board if voltage output is missing and all other components test good.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Dishwasher detergent dispenser assemblyAmazon | Includes door, latch, spring, and actuator as a complete unit for most Kenmore models.
Dishwasher electronic control boardAmazon | Replace only if actuator and wiring test good but no voltage is sent to the dispenser during the cycle.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you are uncomfortable removing the inner door panel, working with wiring harnesses, or testing electrical components with a multimeter. Also call a pro if you have verified the dispenser mechanism is clean and unobstructed, the actuator tests within normal resistance range, and the symptom persists, since live voltage diagnostics and control board replacement require experience and proper safety procedures.
