Kenmore Dishwasher Buttons Not Working - Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

A failed touchpad membrane is the most common cause when buttons won't respond. Replace the control panel assembly after checking for control lock and power cycling the unit.

Kenmore Dishwasher Buttons Not Working — What’s Happening

When your Kenmore dishwasher display lights up but the buttons don’t respond to touch, you’re dealing with a communication failure between the touchpad and the main control board. The board has power (which is why the screen works), but it’s not receiving input signals when you press buttons. This means the dishwasher won’t start, cycle, or respond to any commands even though the door is latched and the unit appears ready.

This is different from a control lock situation where buttons are intentionally disabled by software. In this case, the buttons are genuinely unresponsive due to a hardware or wiring fault in the user interface system.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Check the display for a ‘CL’ icon or lock symbol, then press and hold the ‘Heated Dry’ or ‘Control Lock’ button for 3 to 5 seconds to deactivate the lock feature.
  2. Turn off the circuit breaker feeding the dishwasher for 5 minutes to reset the control board, then restore power and test if buttons respond.
  3. Remove the inner door panel screws to access the control area, then locate the ribbon cable or wire harness connecting the touchpad to the main control board.
  4. Disconnect and reconnect the harness firmly, inspecting all pins and wires for breaks, burn marks, or green corrosion at the connection points.
  5. Use a multimeter in continuity mode to test the harness wiring from the touchpad connector to the board connector, replacing the harness if any circuit is open.
  6. Remove the touchpad assembly and test individual button pads with a multimeter in resistance mode (resistance should drop near zero ohms when a button is pressed), or visually inspect the membrane for cracks or wear.
  7. If the touchpad and wiring test good, check the door latch switch with a multimeter to confirm it closes the circuit when the door shuts, replacing the latch assembly if the switch is open.
  8. Replace the main control board only after confirming the touchpad, wiring, and latch are all functional, as boards are often misdiagnosed when the actual fault is in the touchpad.

PartNotes
Kenmore dishwasher touchpad control panelAmazon | Verify your model number before ordering, as panel designs vary between series.
Dishwasher ribbon cable wire harnessAmazon | Connects touchpad to main board, usually a flat multi-pin cable.
Kenmore dishwasher main control boardAmazon | Replace only after testing touchpad and wiring, as this is the least common failure.
Door latch assembly with microswitchAmazon | Needed if the latch switch does not signal door closure to the board.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you’re uncomfortable working inside the door panel or handling live electrical connections during testing. If you’ve replaced the touchpad and verified all wiring but buttons still don’t work, a pro can accurately diagnose control board faults without unnecessary part swaps. Any situation where you see arcing, burnt wiring, or smell electrical odors requires immediate professional service.
