Ice-O-Matic Error Code E3 — What It Means
Error Code E3 on Ice-O-Matic commercial ice machines indicates a water inlet fault — the machine attempted to fill the water trough but didn’t reach the required level within the allowed time, or the water inlet circuit has been flagged by the control board. Ice-O-Matic’s controller monitors the fill cycle; if adequate water doesn’t arrive in the trough within spec, E3 is logged and ice production stops.
Common Causes
- Water supply shut off or restricted — The most common cause. A partially closed supply valve upstream of the machine limits flow and causes fill timeouts.
- Clogged water inlet valve screen — Mineral scale and sediment accumulate on the valve inlet screen over time, restricting flow.
- Failed water inlet solenoid valve — The solenoid coil fails open circuit, preventing the valve from opening at all.
- Low supply pressure — Ice-O-Matic machines require 20–80 PSI. Below 20 PSI causes slow fills that time out.
Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}
- Verify supply valve is fully open — Trace the water line back to the shutoff. Confirm fully open. Check for kinked supply tubing.
- Measure supply pressure — Use a gauge at the inlet. Below 20 PSI requires a plumber to address the supply side.
- Clean the inlet valve screen — Turn off the water supply. Remove the inlet hose from the machine’s water valve. Inspect and rinse the screen under running water or soak in white vinegar.
- Test the solenoid coil — With a multimeter, measure resistance across the solenoid coil terminals. Typical coil: 200–500Ω. Open circuit = failed solenoid valve. Replace the valve.
- Reset and test — Power cycle the machine and observe the fill cycle. Confirm water fills the trough and E3 does not return.
Parts Often Needed
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Water inlet valve assembly | Amazon | Replace if coil is open or screen is damaged |
| Supply line / water filter | Amazon | Replace if filter is clogged or line is kinked |
When to Call a Pro
If water supply pressure, valve, and screen are all confirmed good and E3 persists, the control board may have a failed water level sensing input. A certified technician should diagnose.
