GE Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working — What’s Happening

A GE refrigerator ice maker not working is a symptom, not a single fault code. The ice maker is not completing its harvest and fill cycle, or one of the conditions it needs to start making ice is missing. GE says the ice maker must reach 16°F before a cycle begins, and the freezer is typically set to 0°F for proper operation.

In practice this usually means the freezer is too warm for the ice maker to initiate a cycle, the water supply is restricted by a clogged filter or frozen line, the ice maker mechanism is stuck or the rake cannot eject cubes, or the ice maker was turned off or reset incorrectly. On some GE models with door-mounted ice makers, failures can also occur in the door water line, hinge coupling, or related valve path.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify the ice maker is turned on at the control and check that the bail arm or feeler arm is in the down (on) position.
  2. Check freezer temperature with a thermometer and confirm it reads near 0°F, then verify the ice maker area reaches at least 16°F.
  3. Inspect the water filter and replace it if it has been in service longer than 6 months or shows reduced flow.
  4. Look for ice blocking the mold or rake arm and clear any obstructions, then run a reset cycle by holding the reset button for 3 to 5 seconds if your model provides one.
  5. Check the fill tube and door water line (on door-ice-maker models) for frozen sections by feeling along the line or testing water flow upstream of the suspected freeze point.
  6. Test the water inlet valve by listening for a click during a fill cycle or measuring the solenoid coil resistance, and verify house water supply is on and flowing.
  7. Run the ice maker through a manual test or reset cycle to verify the rake moves and the harvest mechanism completes, replacing the ice maker assembly only if the motor or rake does not move.
  8. Add more food to the freezer if the load is less than three-quarters full, because a lightly loaded freezer makes temperature less stable and can delay ice production.

When to Call a Pro

Call a pro if the freezer will not reach 0°F despite clearing blocked vents or if the compressor or sealed-system fault is suspected. Also call if the water inlet valve or ice maker assembly needs replacement and you are not comfortable working with the water supply line or removing the ice maker wiring harness. On door-ice-maker models, thawing a frozen line inside the door hinge or replacing the door water coupling can require disassembly that is easier for a technician to perform safely.
