GE Oven F96 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F96 means the control board cannot detect upper oven cooling fan speed. Most often caused by a failed fan motor or hall sensor.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)

GE Oven F96 Error Code — What It Means

F96 is a cooling fan speed or feedback fault. The control board is not receiving the expected tachometer or hall-sensor signal from one of the oven’s cooling fans, so it cannot confirm the fan is running at the correct speed. On most GE double-oven models, F96 maps specifically to the upper oven cooling fan. The fan uses a hall sensor or speed sensor to report rotation back to the control board, and when that signal is missing or incorrect, the oven throws F96 and may shut down to prevent overheating.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker and verify zero voltage at the oven before opening any panels.
  2. Note your exact model number and pull the corresponding GE parts diagram to identify fan and sensor locations for your platform.
  3. Remove the necessary trim and side panels to access the upper oven cooling fan assembly, following the disassembly sequence for your model.
  4. Inspect the fan connector, ground terminal, and harness routing for looseness, heat damage, corrosion, or pinched wires, and clean or re-seat as needed.
  5. Test the fan motor for rotation and listen for unusual noise, then verify the hall sensor or speed sensor is generating a signal if you have the proper test equipment.
  6. Replace the cooling fan assembly if the motor or sensor is faulty, transferring any reusable mounting brackets or sensor boards that the model requires.
  7. If the fan and sensor check out but the code persists, replace the range control board per the model’s parts breakdown and retest before final reassembly.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Upper oven cooling fan / blower motor assemblyAmazon | Includes motor and usually the integral hall sensor or speed sensor board.
Fan hall sensor or speed sensor boardAmazon | Order separately only if your model allows sensor-only replacement and the motor itself still runs.
Range control board / oven control boardAmazon | Replace if the fan assembly tests good but the fault returns immediately after power-up.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you are uncomfortable working inside a high-voltage wall oven, if you lack the proper test tools to verify fan speed and sensor signals, or if the fault returns after replacing the fan assembly and you need control-board-level diagnostics. Also call for help if your model requires significant cabinet disassembly or if you are not confident transferring sensor hardware between the old and new fan assemblies without damaging fragile connectors.
