GE Microwave Waveguide Cover Replacement - Signs & How-To

⚡ Quick Answer

Sparking, arcing, or burn marks inside your GE microwave mean the waveguide cover is damaged. Replacing the mica sheet stops arcing and protects the magnetron.

GE Microwave Waveguide Cover Replacement — What This Part Does

The waveguide cover (also called a mica sheet) sits over the waveguide opening inside your microwave cavity. It protects the waveguide system that feeds microwave energy from the magnetron into the cooking area. GE warns that the microwave should not be used if this cover is removed or badly damaged.

The cover fails when food splatter, moisture, or grease accumulates on its surface or behind it. Over time, mica can absorb moisture and soften, or it can burn and crack from localized heating. When the cover is damaged, arcing and sparking occur, which can damage the waveguide, magnetron antenna, and cavity lining if you continue to run the oven.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the microwave or shut off power at the circuit breaker before starting any service work.
  2. Open the microwave door and inspect the inside cavity, focusing on the side or top wall where the waveguide cover is mounted.
  3. Remove any retaining screws or clips holding the waveguide cover in place (some covers may simply lift out if they are friction-fit).
  4. Lift the old cover out of the cavity and inspect the area behind it for food debris, grease, moisture, or arcing damage to the waveguide opening or cavity wall.
  5. Clean the cavity and waveguide area thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove all contamination, then dry completely before installing the new cover.
  6. Position the new waveguide cover over the opening, making sure it sits flat and fully covers the waveguide without gaps or misalignment.
  7. Reinstall any retaining screws or clips to secure the cover in place, following the original mounting pattern.
  8. Restore power and run a brief test with a cup of water inside to verify normal heating and no sparking or arcing.
  9. If arcing persists or you see deep charring in the waveguide or cavity, stop use immediately and inspect for magnetron or waveguide damage that requires further repair.

When to Call a Pro

If you see deep burn damage or charring inside the waveguide opening, on the cavity wall, or around the magnetron antenna area, the problem may extend beyond the cover itself. Further repair of the waveguide, magnetron, or internal wiring may be needed. Call a qualified appliance technician if arcing continues after cover replacement, if you are not comfortable working inside the microwave cavity, or if you cannot locate the correct OEM replacement part for your model.
