GE Dishwasher Water Inlet Valve Replacement - Signs & How-To

⚡ Quick Answer

Dishwasher won't fill, shows H2O error, or fills too slowly. Replacing a clogged or failed water inlet valve restores proper water flow.

GE Dishwasher Water Inlet Valve Replacement — What This Part Does

The water inlet valve is a solenoid-operated component that controls household water flow into the dishwasher tub. When the control board signals a fill cycle, the valve opens to let water in, then closes once the correct level is reached. The valve fails when the solenoid coil burns out, the mechanism sticks closed or open, or mineral deposits and debris block the inlet screen or internal passages. Low water pressure, corrosion, and normal wear over time all contribute to valve failure.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dishwasher from the outlet or turn off the circuit breaker at the electrical panel.
  2. Turn off the household water supply to the dishwasher at the shutoff valve under the sink or behind the unit.
  3. Remove the lower dish rack and the kick plate or lower front access panel to expose the inlet valve and supply line.
  4. Place a shallow pan or towels under the valve area, then disconnect the water supply line from the valve inlet using an adjustable wrench.
  5. Disconnect the internal fill hose from the outlet side of the valve and remove any mounting screws or clips securing the valve to the frame.
  6. Unplug the wire harness connector from the valve terminals and lift the old valve out of the dishwasher.
  7. Install the new water inlet valve in the mounting bracket, reconnect the internal fill hose, and secure all fasteners and clamps.
  8. Reconnect the wire harness to the new valve terminals, then reattach the household water supply line and hand-tighten the fitting.
  9. Turn on the water supply and inspect the valve and connections for leaks, then restore power and run a short fill test cycle to confirm proper operation.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you are uncomfortable working with both electrical and plumbing connections, or if the fill fault persists after valve replacement and supply line inspection. A technician can test the float switch, control board output signals, and water pressure at the valve to diagnose wiring faults or other fill-system problems that are not resolved by a simple valve swap.
