GE Dishwasher H2O Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

H2O means insufficient water during fill. Most often caused by a closed supply valve, clogged inlet screen, or failing inlet valve.

GE Dishwasher H2O Error Code — What It Means

The H2O code on a GE dishwasher indicates the control is not detecting the expected water fill. The machine believes it is receiving too little water, filling too slowly, or not getting the pressure change it expects during the fill cycle. This is a water supply and fill problem, not a general electronic fault. The dishwasher will not complete a cycle until it can achieve a proper fill.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Reset the dishwasher by unplugging it or flipping the breaker for 30 seconds, then run a cycle to confirm the error repeats.
  2. Check the supply valve under the sink and turn it fully counterclockwise to the open position, then verify adequate home water pressure (20 to 120 PSI range is typical).
  3. Inspect the inlet hose from the shutoff valve to the dishwasher for kinks, pinches, or blockages, and straighten or replace as needed.
  4. Clean the inlet screen by shutting off water, disconnecting the supply line at the valve, and removing any debris or mineral buildup from the small mesh filter inside the inlet port.
  5. Test the water inlet valve by disconnecting power and water, accessing the valve behind the lower panel, and checking continuity across the solenoid coil (typical reading around 50 to 60 ohms), replacing the valve if it fails or does not pass water.
  6. Inspect and clean the pressure sensor on newer models by removing the lower kick plate, locating the pressure switch, checking the sensing port or tube for grease or debris, and clearing any blockage with compressed air or a small brush.
  7. Reassemble and test after each repair by running a short cycle to confirm water enters normally and the H2O code clears from the display.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Water inlet valveAmazon | Common GE replacement part numbers include WD15X93 and WD12X10128, verify fit for your model.
Inlet hose / supply lineAmazon | Replace if kinked, cracked, or internally obstructed and cannot be cleared.
Pressure sensor / pressure switchAmazon | For newer GE models, replace if cleaning the sensing port does not resolve the fault.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you have verified full water supply, cleaned the inlet screen, and tested basic electrical continuity on the inlet valve but the code persists. A professional can perform detailed pressure testing, trace wiring faults in the control board or sensor circuit, and safely handle refrigerant-free water system diagnostics. If you are uncomfortable working with water connections or electrical testing, or if the dishwasher is still under warranty, professional service is the safer choice.
