GE Dishwasher Buttons Not Working — What’s Happening

When your GE dishwasher buttons stop responding but the display lights are still on and you hear clicks or tones when pressing them, the issue is a loss of communication between the touchpad and the main control board. This is not a power problem. The main board is not receiving the voltage signal from the touchpad when you press a button, or the touchpad itself has a failed circuit.

The most common cause is a worn-out touchpad where the conductive coating or membrane has failed. Physical obstructions like grease or debris can also prevent buttons from making proper contact. Less often, the wire harness connecting the touchpad to the control board has loose or corroded connections.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Inspect all buttons for physical obstructions or sticky mechanisms and clean the control panel with a soft, dry cloth or slightly damp microfiber towel.
  2. If any button is stuck or not depressing smoothly, apply a small amount of silicone spray or WD-40 to the mechanism and work it in by pressing repeatedly.
  3. Disconnect power at the breaker for 5 minutes to reset the control board logic, then reconnect and test all buttons.
  4. Check if the dishwasher is in Demo Mode by holding the Lock or Start button for 3-5 seconds (consult your model’s manual for the exact exit sequence).
  5. Turn off power and remove the bottom rack and kick plate to access the touchpad assembly behind the door or console.
  6. Inspect the wire harness connector between the touchpad and main control board for loose pins or corrosion, then re-seat the connector firmly.
  7. Use a multimeter to test continuity on the non-working button switches. If the meter shows infinite resistance (open circuit) when you press a button, the touchpad is faulty and needs replacement.
  8. If the touchpad passes continuity testing but buttons still don’t work after reconnecting, replace the main control board.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Touchpad/User Interface AssemblyAmazon | Includes the button membrane and display circuit, specific to your GE model number.
Main Control BoardAmazon | Only replace if touchpad tests good electrically but still doesn’t communicate with the board.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

If you’re uncomfortable working with electrical connections or using a multimeter, call a technician. Also get professional help if you’ve replaced the touchpad and wire connections are secure but buttons still don’t respond, as this points to a main board issue that requires proper diagnostic equipment to confirm. Technicians can also identify model-specific quirks with Demo Mode or control logic that aren’t obvious from the manual.
