Electrolux Dryer E66 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

E66 means the thermal limiter tripped due to overheating. Most often caused by a blocked exhaust vent or a failed thermal fuse.

Electrolux Dryer E66 Error Code — What It Means

The E66 error code on Electrolux dryers signals that the dryer has detected an overheat condition and the thermal limiter or thermal fuse has tripped to protect the machine. This is a safety shutdown. The code appears when the thermal cutoff device opens its circuit, either because the dryer actually overheated or because the safety component itself has failed. In most cases the root problem is restricted airflow that lets heat build up inside the drum and cabinet.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the dryer and verify your model number so you order the correct thermal limiter and thermostat for your machine.
  2. Inspect the entire exhaust path from the lint screen through the internal duct, wall vent, and exterior cap and remove all lint, debris, or obstructions you find.
  3. Access the heater assembly by removing the rear panel or the front and drum (depending on your model) and locate the thermal cutoff and high-limit thermostat mounted on or near the heater housing.
  4. Test the thermal limiter for continuity using a multimeter set to ohms; an open reading (infinite resistance) confirms the thermal fuse has tripped and must be replaced.
  5. Check the wiring and terminals at the thermal cutoff, high-limit, and heater for burns, looseness, or broken conductors and repair or replace any damaged harness connections.
  6. Replace both the thermal cutoff and the high-limit thermostat if the thermal fuse is open, because the high-limit should have stopped heating before the cutoff blew.
  7. Reassemble the dryer, restore power, and run a test cycle to verify the code clears; if E66 returns and airflow is confirmed good, proceed to troubleshoot the control board or sensor circuit.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Thermal limiter / thermal fuse / thermal cutoffAmazon | Primary safety device that opens when the dryer overheats; not resettable and must be replaced if open.
High-limit thermostatAmazon | Replace at the same time as the thermal cutoff since it should have interrupted heat before the fuse tripped.
Wiring harness or terminal connector kitAmazon | Needed if heat damage or broken wires are found at the thermal device or heater connections.
Electronic control boardAmazon | Only replace if thermal devices and airflow test good and fault logic points to a control or sensor circuit issue.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable working with a multimeter, accessing internal dryer components, or identifying wiring faults. If you have already cleared the vent, replaced the thermal cutoff and high-limit thermostat, and the E66 code returns immediately, the problem may be in the control board or sensor circuit and professional diagnostics will save you time and parts cost. Also call a pro if you find evidence of arcing, repeated thermal fuse failures, or if your dryer shares complex venting with other appliances or building systems.
