⚡ Quick Answer

AL-82 is a CSIV parameter error: the Profibus module failed to initialize. Most often fixed by resetting communication parameters.

Danfoss FC302 AL-82 Fault — What It Means

Alarm 82 on the Danfoss FC302 is a CSIV parameter error. The CSIV (Communication Slave Interface) module failed to initialize a parameter during communication startup. This is almost always a Profibus configuration or data integrity issue, not a hardware failure like a shorted IGBT or low DC bus. The drive’s internal communication interface could not load required parameters from memory, typically because parameter memory is corrupted, Profibus settings in the 8-1x or 9-xx parameter series are incorrect, or there is a mismatch between the drive’s configuration and the master controller’s profile.

This fault does not indicate a motor, inverter, or power-stage problem. It is a software and configuration issue. The drive remains safe to operate once the fault is cleared and parameters are correctly configured.

Before You Replace Anything

Technicians sometimes replace the control board before verifying parameters. Perform a full parameter reset and re-enter Profibus settings from backup first, which solves the majority of AL-82 faults at zero cost.

Common Causes

Quick Diagnosis

Answer these to narrow it down fast.

Is the Profibus cable securely connected at both the drive and master controller, with no visible damage?
Yes: The wiring is likely sound. Proceed to check parameter settings and perform a communication reset.
No: Repair or replace the Profibus cable and verify shielding and terminations are correct before resetting parameters.
Does the drive's display show stable 24 VDC control voltage when you measure at terminals 12 and 20?
Yes: Power supply is stable. Focus on parameter reset and firmware update.
No: Troubleshoot the 24 VDC control supply or check for loose connections on the control card before addressing parameters.
After performing a full parameter reset (parameter 0-10), does the AL-82 fault clear and the drive accept new Profibus settings?
Yes: The issue was corrupt parameter memory. Re-enter all Profibus parameters from backup and test communication.
No: The control board's flash memory may be damaged or firmware is incompatible. Update firmware or consider control board replacement.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Verify communication wiring. Inspect the Profibus cable for damage, confirm it is shielded twisted pair, check that connections at terminals 12 (24 V), 27 (digital input), and communication ports are tight, and measure resistance to confirm cable integrity.
  2. Check control supply voltage. Measure 24 VDC and 12 VDC at the control card terminals. If voltage sags more than 10% of nominal, inspect the control supply PCB or external 24 VDC source.
  3. Perform a parameter reset. Navigate to parameter 0-10 (Factory Reset) and select Full Reset or Communication Reset. This clears corrupt parameter memory. Have a backup of Profibus parameters ready to re-enter.
  4. Re-enter Profibus parameters. Configure parameter 8-10 (Profibus enable), parameter 8-11 (slave address), parameter 8-12 (baud rate), and any other 8-1x or 9-xx series settings to match the master controller’s profile. Refer to your system documentation for correct values.
  5. Update firmware. Connect the drive to a PC running Danfoss MCT 31 or MCT 10 software. Verify the drive’s firmware version matches the Profibus master’s profile. Upload the latest compatible firmware if needed.
  6. Reinitialize AMA if required. If a sine-wave filter is present or motor parameters have changed, run parameter 1-29 (Automatic Motor Adaptation) in reduced mode to make sure motor data is correct.
  7. Test communication. Power cycle the drive and monitor for AL-82. Confirm the Profibus master recognizes the drive and data exchange is stable. If the fault persists after firmware update and parameter reset, replace the control board.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Danfoss FC302 control card (logic board)Amazon | Order the specific control card variant for your drive model (e.g. FC302-CC-001). Required only if parameter reset and firmware update fail.
Profibus DP cable, shielded twisted pairAmazon | Use if existing cable shows damage or poor shielding. Confirm cable length is under the maximum for your baud rate.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified drives technician or control systems integrator if you do not have access to Danfoss MCT software, are unfamiliar with Profibus configuration, or cannot locate the correct parameter values for your network. A pro can back up and restore parameters, update firmware safely, and verify that the master controller’s profile matches the drive settings. Also call a pro if the AL-82 fault persists after parameter reset and firmware update, as control board replacement requires proper handling of static-sensitive components and re-commissioning of the drive. High-voltage DC bus circuits (typically 300-600 VDC) remain energized even when mains power is off, so any work inside the drive enclosure should be performed by a trained technician with lockout/tagout procedures.

Rough cost: A pro service call runs about $150-400 for parameter diagnosis and reset, or $300-700 if control board replacement is needed.
