Danfoss FC302 VFD AL-153 Fault - Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

AL-153 is not a valid FC302 code. You likely have AL-15 (Hardware Mismatch), meaning an option card is wrong or not seated. Reseat the card.

Danfoss FC302 VFD AL-153 Fault — What It Means

The code AL-153 does not exist in the Danfoss FC302 fault library. The FC302 series supports alarms only up to AL-39. The string “AL-15” refers to AL-15 (Hardware Mismatch), which means the drive has detected an accessory option card that is not recognized, not seated correctly, or incompatible with the FC302 firmware. Common option cards include brake control modules, serial communication cards, and fieldbus adapters.

When AL-15 appears, the drive flags a mismatch between the installed card and what the logic board expects. This can be a physical seating problem, a wrong card for the drive model, or a firmware version that does not support the card. The drive will not operate normally until the mismatch is resolved.

Before You Replace Anything

Technicians sometimes replace the entire logic board when the real issue is simply a loose or incompatible option card. Always reseat and verify card compatibility before replacing the control PCB.

Common Causes

Quick Diagnosis

Answer these to narrow it down fast.

Does the alarm clear when you remove the option card and power up?
Yes: The card is faulty or incompatible. Verify the card part number against the FC302 compatibility matrix and replace if needed.
No: The logic board may be mis-flagged or damaged. Update firmware or replace the control PCB.
Is the option card part number listed in the FC302 manual as compatible?
Yes: The card is correct. Check for bent pins, reseat firmly, and verify firmware version supports the card.
No: The card is wrong for this drive. Order the correct FC302-compatible option card from Danfoss or an authorized distributor.
Does the card have visible damage (bent pins, scorch marks, corrosion)?
Yes: Replace the option card. Physical damage prevents proper recognition.
No: Update the drive firmware to the latest version and reseat the card. If AL-15 persists, replace the logic board.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Safely power down the drive and disconnect AC mains per Danfoss lockout-tagout procedures to prevent shock or arc flash.
  2. Remove the option card by releasing any retaining clips or screws, then gently pull the card straight out of the slot.
  3. Inspect the card and slot for bent pins, corrosion, or debris. Clean contacts with electronics-safe cleaner if needed.
  4. Reseat the card firmly into the slot, pressing until you feel or hear it click into place. Verify alignment with the slot guides.
  5. Power up the drive and observe the display. If AL-15 clears, the card is now recognized and the issue is resolved.
  6. Verify card compatibility by checking the option card part number against the FC302 manual or Danfoss compatibility matrix online.
  7. Update drive firmware if the card is compatible but still not recognized. Download the latest firmware from Danfoss and follow the upload procedure in the manual.
  8. Replace the card or logic board if AL-15 persists after reseating and firmware update. Order the correct FC302-compatible card or control PCB from Danfoss or an authorized supplier.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
FC302-compatible option cardAmazon | Verify the exact part number matches your FC302 model and firmware version in the Danfoss compatibility matrix.
FC302 logic/control PCBAmazon | Replace only if the card seats correctly but the drive still flags mismatch after firmware update.
Shielded communication cableAmazon | For serial or fieldbus option cards, use Danfoss-approved cable if the existing cable is damaged or has shorts.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified technician or Danfoss service partner if you are not trained to work on VFDs or if AL-15 persists after reseating the card and verifying compatibility. High-voltage DC bus capacitors inside the drive can hold lethal charge even after mains power is removed. Professionals have the tools to safely discharge the bus, verify firmware versions, and access Danfoss technical support for advanced diagnostics. If the logic board needs replacement, the new board may require parameter cloning or reconfiguration, which is best handled by someone familiar with FC302 programming and fieldbus setup.

Rough cost: A pro service call runs about $150-400 for service call and card replacement or logic board swap.
