⚡ Quick Answer

No hot water, lukewarm water, or tripped breaker means your upper or lower thermostat has failed. Replacing it restores proper element control.

Bradford White Water Heater Thermostat Replacement Guide — What This Part Does

The upper thermostat on a Bradford White electric water heater acts first, controlling power to the upper element and switching power to the lower thermostat when satisfied. The lower thermostat then controls the lower element. Both are surface-mount controls clipped to a bracket on the tank.

Thermostats fail when internal contacts wear out, the high-limit (ECO) trips from overheating, or terminals burn from loose connections. The upper thermostat directs the power flow, so a failure there means no hot water at all. A failed lower thermostat means you get some hot water but not enough for sustained use.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Turn off power to the water heater at the main breaker panel.
  2. Remove the upper or lower access cover (two screws) and pull back the foam insulation to expose the thermostat and wiring.
  3. Lift the gray plastic thermostat cover to expose the wire terminals.
  4. Take a photo of the wiring and temperature setting, then disconnect all spade terminals from the thermostat.
  5. Slide the thermostat upward and out of the metal mounting bracket (or press the release tabs if present).
  6. Slide the new thermostat down into the bracket until it snaps into place and sits flat against the tank.
  7. Reconnect each wire to the correct terminal exactly as removed, pressing each spade connector firmly onto the terminal.
  8. Set the thermostat dial to the same temperature as the old unit.
  9. Reinstall the plastic cover, insulation, and access panel, then restore power and wait one hour to verify hot water.

When to Call a Pro

Call a licensed electrician or plumber if you are not comfortable working with 240-volt wiring, if voltage tests show no power at the upper thermostat with the breaker on, or if replacing both thermostats does not restore hot water (the elements or wiring may also be failed). If the high-limit trips immediately after reset, the problem may be a grounded element or internal tank fault that requires professional diagnosis. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
