Bradford White Water Heater Error Codes Guide

⚡ Quick Answer

Complete Bradford White water heater error code guide. Covers Infiniti, eF, and Defender series fault codes with diagnostic steps and technician fixes.

Bradford White Water Heater Error Codes: Complete Guide

Bradford White manufactures residential and commercial water heaters. Their Infiniti series (tankless), eF series (electric), and Defender series (gas) models use LED flash codes and digital display codes to communicate faults. This guide covers all Bradford White error codes.

Bradford White Infiniti Tankless Error Codes

CodeDescriptionCommon Cause
E01Ignition failureGas supply, igniter, flame sensor
E02Flame loss during operationGas pressure drop, flame sensor
E03Overheat / high limit tripScale buildup, low flow, high setpoint
E04Cold water inlet sensor faultSensor resistance out of range
E05Hot water outlet sensor faultSensor resistance out of range
E06Heat exchanger sensor faultSensor fault
E07Flue temperature sensor faultFlue sensor fault
E08Low water flowDirty filter screen, low pressure
E09Combustion fan faultFan motor or speed sensor
E10Gas valve faultGas valve or wiring
E11High flue temperatureScale buildup, poor venting
E12Freeze protection activatedUnit in freeze protection mode

Bradford White Gas Storage (Defender Series) — LED Flash Codes

Gas storage water heaters with the Hydrojet system use the pilot/status LED to indicate faults:

Flash PatternDescriptionAction
1 flash every 3 secondsNormal — pilot lit and operationalNo action
2 flashesThermopile voltage below 350 mVClean thermocouple/thermopile, check draft
3 flashesPilot outageRelight pilot, check gas supply
4 flashesIgnition failure — pilot not detectedCheck spark gap, gas supply, thermocouple
5 flashesSensor faultTemperature sensor fault
6 flashesThermal switch openHigh temp trip — check for scale or low flow
7 flashesGas valve faultCheck gas valve and wiring
ContinuousThermopile voltage > 350 mV (unit operating)Normal during operation

Bradford White Electric Water Heater Error Codes

Electric models use a simple reset system:

Most Common Bradford White Faults

E03 — Overheat / High Limit (Infiniti Tankless)

  1. Descale the heat exchanger — scale is the most common cause in hard water areas
  2. Check inlet filter screen — clean if clogged
  3. Lower temperature setpoint if set above 140°F
  4. Check water flow rate — minimum 0.5 GPM

E01 — Ignition Failure (Infiniti Tankless)

  1. Check gas supply pressure at the unit (3.5 in. w.c. natural gas)
  2. Inspect igniter for carbon deposits — clean with fine sandpaper
  3. Check flame sensor (thermopile) voltage — should be above 350 mV when lit
  4. Inspect burner for blocked ports

2 Flashes — Low Thermopile Voltage (Defender Series)

  1. Clean the thermocouple with fine steel wool
  2. Check draft — poor draft reduces flame and thermopile output
  3. If voltage stays below 350 mV after cleaning: replace thermopile
