Bosch Dishwasher Spray Arm Replacement — What This Part Does
The upper and lower spray arms distribute hot water under pressure to every corner of the dishwasher during the wash and rinse cycles. Water flows from the pump through the center hub and shoots out of small holes in the rotating arms to blast food and grease off your dishes. Over time, hard water deposits and food debris plug the outlet holes, reducing flow and cleaning power. The plastic arms can also crack or warp from heat and mechanical stress after years of use, and the center hubs sometimes seize or come loose so the arms stop spinning freely.
Bosch models with PowerControl (controlled lower spray arm) or Extra Clean Zone nozzles have additional moving parts that can fail. If the lower arm can’t find its reference position or the diverter circuit faults, Bosch lists that as a control-board issue rather than a simple spray-arm problem. Most spray-arm complaints come down to mechanical wear or blockage, not electrical faults, so physical inspection and cleaning or replacement of the arms themselves solves the majority of poor-wash complaints.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Dishes come out dirty or still have food residue Blocked or cracked spray arms can’t distribute water evenly across the load.
- Spray arm doesn’t spin during a cycle A seized hub, warped plastic, or broken mount stops the arm from rotating freely.
- Visible cracks, splits, or missing end caps on the arm Plastic fatigue or impact damage creates leaks that drop wash pressure and reduce cleaning.
- White or brown buildup clogging the spray holes Hard water scale and grease deposits block the outlet jets and choke water flow.
- PowerControl lower spray-arm reference error on the display Bosch flags this as a control-board circuit fault rather than a simple arm blockage, often requiring reset or service.
- Loose or wobbly spray arm that falls off the mount Worn retainer clips or locking nuts let the arm detach or wobble instead of staying centered.
How to Replace It
- Shut off power to the dishwasher at the circuit breaker and turn off the water supply valve under the sink.
- Open the dishwasher door and pull out the lower dish rack to access the lower spray arm.
- Lift the lower spray arm straight up to release it from the center hub mount (on Bosch SMD6ZCX60G and similar models it unclips upward).
- Pull out the upper dish rack and locate the upper spray arm mounted to the underside of the top rack or the tub ceiling.
- Turn the upper spray-arm locking nut about 25 degrees counterclockwise to release the arm, then pull the arm and nut assembly downward (if your model has Extra Clean Zone nozzles, remove those pieces first and set them aside).
- Inspect both old spray arms for cracks, warping, and blocked holes, then flush hot water through the center hub and outlet holes to confirm they are clear or permanently clogged.
- Install the new lower spray arm by aligning the center hub over the mount and pressing down until it clicks into place, then spin it by hand to confirm free rotation.
- Install the new upper spray arm by inserting it into the mount, threading the locking nut counterclockwise about 25 degrees to lock it, then reattach any Extra Clean Zone nozzles if present.
- Restore power and water, run a short rinse cycle without dishes, and open the door mid-cycle to verify both spray arms are rotating and water is jetting from all holes.

When to Call a Pro
If you see a wash-arm diverter fault or PowerControl reference-position error on the display and the fault returns after resetting power at the breaker for 30 seconds, Bosch directs you to contact customer support because the problem is in the control-board circuit rather than the spray arm itself. Also call a tech if you’ve replaced both spray arms and cleaned all blockages but dishes still come out dirty, since you may have a circulation pump or water-inlet valve problem upstream of the arms.
